Job Summary

The Role:
The Geotechnical Inspector is a trusted technical expert at the forefront of mine safety and environmental protection in British Columbia. Overseeing geotechnical risks associated with tailings storage facilities, dams, open pit slopes, waste rock dumps, and underground workings, this role helps ensure safe, responsible, and compliant mining operations. Through a blend of inspections, investigations, and technical guidance, the position makes a meaningful difference in protecting workers, communities, and the environment while supporting confidence in the province's mining sector.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in geological, mining, or geotechnical engineering. Preference may be given to advanced degree(s).
  • Minimum three (3) years of post-graduation experience in geotechnical engineering or mining engineering. Preference may be given to those with mining experience and those with underground design experience.
  • Must have a valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence.

Professional Registration and Certification Requirements:
  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC). Note: "Immediately eligible for registration" means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.

Preference may be given to candidates with one (1) or more of the following:
  • Compliance and enforcement regulatory experience.
  • Experience with issues management, problem solving, and providing expert advice to industry clients, senior management, internal staff and other agencies.
  • Experience designing, assessing or maintaining geotechnical aspects of mine site components, such as, but not limited to: tailings impoundments, waste rock dumps, open pit slopes, underground workings and water management structures.

Additional Requirements:
  • Must be available to travel by air, fixed wing, helicopter and overnight on short notice.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, walk up and down steep ramps.
  • Work in underground conditions using appropriate protective equipment and in environments where exposure to chemical vapours, noise, dust, heat and cold are present.
  • May be required to occasionally work evenings and weekends and be exposed to incident scenes involving serious injuries and fatalities.



About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be located in Victoria, Vancouver, Smithers, Prince George, Cranbrook, or Kamloops; other locations may be considered.
Depending on the successful candidate's location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
