Full Job Description
What is WEX seeking?

In-house Legal Director, Procurement setting and directing a team strategy and execution roadmap for the global Procurement Legal team, collaborating and problem-solving on a daily basis with the best! The Legal Director, Procurement will provide general and strategic legal support for WEX's global Procurement Legal team on a range of vendor and other third-party transactions and related matters. The ideal candidate will operate within a fast-paced and evolving environment, balancing short-term operational execution with long-term strategic outcomes.

How you'll make an impact
  • Lead a team of attorneys and/or legal professionals, maintaining oversight of legal workflows to ensure consistent, high-quality advisory services that align with the goals of supported business units. Focus on building a leadership pipeline by delegating, leading, and mentoring team members working through increasingly complex matters.
  • Provide general in-house support for legal matters concerning WEX's Procurement team activities and operations, including negotiating high stakes, complex transactions with vendors and other third parties.
  • Review, negotiate, and draft a variety of vendor and third party agreements, leading the negotiation of sophisticated agreements and navigating material deviations from standard positions, including on technology licenses (software-as-a-service, software, cloud, and related ancillary documents, including SLAs, security exhibits, and privacy addenda), consulting, professional services, telecom, hardware, marketing, real estate, and other services agreements and related documentation.
  • Identify, manage, and proactively escalate issues and risks arising during negotiations, particularly matters with the potential to set enterprise-wide precedents, alter WEX's legal standing, or involve high legal exposure.
  • Develop and maintain standard templates and playbooks for vendor agreements; provide guidance on development and maintenance of contracting processes to set frameworks, guide teams through ambiguity, and drive alignment across functions.
  • Present complex issues in a clear and concise manner and provide succinct results-oriented legal advice to business owners and stakeholders, expertly balancing business and commercial objectives with risk mitigation.
  • Act as a strategic partner to business leaders (often at the VP/SVP level) with a deep understanding of business priorities, financial drivers, and operational realities. Move beyond reactive advising to proactively shape business decisions and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with other legal colleagues to identify and provide comprehensive legal guidance on interrelated legal matters.
  • Work closely with Procurement and Vendor Risk Management functions to further develop, maintain, and operationalize processes related to vendor assessment, on-boarding, risk and performance monitoring, policy compliance, and offboarding.
  • Manage and resolve specific contractual queries and pre-litigation disputes related to vendor and other third-party contracts.
  • Proactively support opportunities to improve process efficiency within the legal team and move beyond direct problem-solving of individual matters to ensure the team is equipped to handle them effectively and consistently.
  • Be willing to assume additional responsibilities as needed.

Experience you'll bring
  • J.D. from accredited law school plus 10+ years of legal experience, admitted in at least one U.S. state, ideally with in-house experience
  • Significant experience negotiating technology license agreements (software-as-a-service, software, cloud, and related ancillary documents, including SLAs, security exhibits, and privacy addenda)
  • Experience negotiating consulting, professional services, telecom, hardware, marketing, and real estate agreements
  • Confidence interacting with senior management and sophisticated vendors, serving as a key voice in planning and prioritization discussions
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem solving, detailed analysis, and issue resolution capabilities, with the ability to lead through organizational and systemic complexity
  • Demonstrated ability to understand complex commercial and technical issues and business needs, and to identify and address associated risks by integrating legal strategy with business objectives
  • Demonstrated familiarity and a developing proficiency with AI tools and capabilities, coupled with a strong willingness and eagerness to experiment with and incorporate AI into daily workflows
  • Effective organizational, multi-tasking, prioritization, and re-prioritization skills, including, in particular, a demonstrated ability to manage high contract volume at times
  • Self-starter and problem solver accustomed to operating independently, but while exercising sound judgment regarding appropriate escalation
  • Proactive in pursuit of continuous improvement, learning new skills, and addressing business needs with practical solutions that shape how the organization approaches risk, opportunity, and decision-making
