Full Job Description
We're looking for a Lead Software Engineer to provide hands-on technical leadership across our Ruby on Rails platform, with a strong focus on DevOps, AWS, Kubernetes, and platform evolution. This role will help guide the transition from a single-tenant architecture toward a scalable, multi-tenant (Shopify-like) model, while also partnering closely with DevOps and engineering teams to identify, fix, and improve broken development and operational processes.

This role is both builder and fixer: writing production Rails code, improving infrastructure and delivery workflows, and raising the bar on reliability, scalability, and execution across teams.

Essential job Duties
    • Lead the design, development, and operation of Ruby on Rails services running on AWS, GCP and Kubernetes.
    • Serve as a technical lead for evolving the platform toward a scalable, multi-tenant architecture, balancing long-term direction with near-term delivery.
    • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested Rails code while setting technical standards for the team.
    • Partner closely with DevOps and development teams to improve CI/CD, deployment, and operational workflows.
    • Identify and remediate broken or inefficient engineering processes, tooling gaps, and handoffs that slow delivery or increase risk.
    • Design and review system architectures with a focus on scalability, reliability, and tenant isolation.
    • Optimize application performance, database queries, background jobs, and infrastructure utilization.
    • Improve production readiness through better monitoring, alerting, logging, and incident response practices.
    • Participate in and help lead on-call rotations, root-cause analysis, and long-term corrective actions.
    • Mentor engineers on cloud-native development, DevOps practices, and production ownership.
    • Collaborate with Product, QA, and Engineering Leadership to align technical execution with business priorities.

Other Job Duties
    • Other duties as assigned by supervisor or HHAeXchange leader.

Travel Requirements
    • Travel 10-25%, including overnight travel

Required Education, Experience, Certifications and Skills
    • 7+ years of experience building and operating production-grade Ruby on Rails applications.
    • Demonstrated experience in DevOps or platform-focused engineering roles, not just application development.
    • Strong hands-on experience with AWS infrastructure (e.g., EKS/ECS, EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch).
    • Practical experience deploying and operating applications in Kubernetes environments.
    • Experience designing and improving CI/CD pipelines and release processes.
    • Strong proficiency with relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, including performance tuning.
    • Solid understanding of software architecture, system design, and tradeoffs at scale.
    • Proven ability to debug complex production issues and drive them to resolution.
    • Comfortable working in Agile development environments with cross-functional teams.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
    • Willingness to explore and adopt AI tools responsibly to enhance productivity and innovation in your role

Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience leading or contributing to single-tenant - multi-tenant SaaS transformations.
    • Experience with distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, or event-driven systems at scale
    • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar).
    • Experience operating high-traffic, multi-tenant SaaS platforms.
    • Familiarity with observability tools such as Datadog, New Relic, Prometheus, or Scout APM.
    • Experience with containerization (Docker) and Kubernetes-based orchestration at scale.
    • Knowledge of background job processing systems (e.g., Sidekiq, Resque).
    • Experience modernizing large legacy Rails codebases.

The base salary range for this US-based, full-time, and exempt position is $120,000-130,000/yr, not including variable compensation. An employee's exact starting salary will be based on various factors including but not limited to experience, education, training, merit, location, and the ability to exemplify the HHAeXchange core values.

This is a benefits-eligible position. HHAeXchange offers competitive health plans, paid time-off, company paid holidays, 401K retirement program with a Company elected match, including other company sponsored programs.
