Full Job Description
The Lead Scientist directs, initiates and executes research strategies in partnership with Principal Investigator. Also, designs and conducts studies to investigate specific basic science or clinical research questions within field of expertise. Focuses on one or more specific scientific endeavors of the laboratory. Develops new experimental procedures and publishes research results.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Initiates and executes research strategies in partnership with the PI or more senior scientist.
  • Develops new research protocols, techniques and procedures. Identifies emerging scientific and technical trends and advances with possible impact on laboratory research
  • Identifies experimental data pertinent to the analysis problem. Processes, organizes and summarizes data, reporting these experimental results. Monitors quality and integrity of recorded information and data. Ensures data collection and entry methods meet quality standards. Interprets data as it relates to research problem. Generates hypotheses to predict future implications based on the critical evaluation of these data.
  • May publish as first author in journals within discipline. Participates in manuscript peer review process as a formal reviewer where required. Presents research both internally and externally to multi-disciplinary audiences.
  • Provides lab operation support and makes recommendations regarding equipment use and maintenance, supplies, etc. Troubleshoots instrument and equipment issues. Provides input into lab operation processes and procedures. Recommends equipment acquisition and decommissioning. Anticipates laboratory operational and capital needs and promotes standards of safety.
  • Provides instruction and guidance to junior level staff and trains as needed.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals of the department and the institution.


Minimum Education and/or Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific area is required


Minimum Experience:
  • Twelve (12) years of relevant work experience is required
  • Ten (10) years of relevant experience is required with a Master's degree
  • Seven (7) years of relevant work experience is required with a PhD


Compensation
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $125,840 - $238,160 per year for the role of Lead Scientist - Genomic and Translational Neuroscience.
