Full Job Description
We're looking for a Lead Product Designer to join our Engage team - a group dedicated to creating experiences that spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and inspire lifelong discovery. By helping people make sense of their family history and uncover meaningful connections, we empower millions of members to continue exploring the stories that shape who they are.
This role is focused on genetic genealogy - a unique opportunity to bring together Ancestry's family history and DNA experiences to help customers understand how genetic evidence strengthens and expands their family story. You'll work at the intersection of science, storytelling, and our rich record content, creating experiences that seamlessly integrate DNA insights into our core family history workflows.
You'll report to the Design Director on the Engage team and collaborate closely with peers across product, design, science, engineering, research, content, and data analytics. Together, you'll create experiences that help members connect evidence, understand relationships, and unlock the full power of their family history journey.
What you'll do
• Lead the design of experiences that bring DNA insights and family history research together into a unified customer journey.
• Shape product strategy alongside product managers, engineers, and scientists, identifying opportunities to deepen engagement and unlock new forms of discovery.
• Design intuitive experiences that help members understand, trust, and act on genetic evidence within core family history workflows.
• Translate complex scientific concepts and rich datasets into simple, approachable, and delightful user experiences.
• Partner closely with research and customer insights teams, including direct engagement with customers, to inform design decisions that build trust and clarity.
• Create high-quality flows, prototypes, and polished interactions that bring ideas to life and inspire teams.
• Bring a systems-thinking approach to design, helping create cohesion across family history and DNA experiences.
• Influence product direction through strong storytelling, customer advocacy, and cross-functional collaboration.
• Raise the quality bar through thoughtful critique, collaboration, and mentorship of other designers.
Who you are
• Significant experience designing direct to consumer products, with a track record of delivering experiences that drive engagement and create customer value.
• Comfortable operating as a lead individual contributor - setting direction while remaining deeply hands-on in the work.
• Skilled at turning complex information and workflows into intuitive, approachable experiences.
• Strong systems thinker who can connect customer needs with business goals and long-term product strategy.
• Exceptional interaction and visual design skills, with a portfolio demonstrating craft and attention to detail.
• Comfortable navigating ambiguity and solving problems that span multiple domains and teams.
• Strong storyteller and communicator, able to align stakeholders around a shared vision and influence decisions across disciplines.
• Passionate about helping people make meaningful discoveries and understand the stories that connect them to their past.
• Experienced partnering closely with product managers, engineers, researchers, and cross-functional teams to deliver impactful outcomes.
Bonus: Experience designing discovery, search, educational, AI-powered, or data-rich products, or familiarity with genealogy, DNA, health, science, or other evidence-based domains.
