Full Job Description
If you are an ENGINEERING Professional, Copeland's Controls Solutions business unit has an exciting opportunity to influence the next generation of variable speed drive products. We are looking for a highly motivated Lead Motor Control Engineer - Power Electronics to join our Global Power Electronics team. Reporting to the Director of Global Product Engineering - Power Electronics, the Lead Motor Control Engineer will utilize knowledge and experience of power electronics motor control and embedded firmware design, development, modeling and simulation to support sourcing and qualification of variable speed drive products. Provide customer support and sustain appropriate life cycle of these products for growth and profitability.

As a Lead Motor Control Engineer - Power Electronics, you will:
  • Develop, support and test embedded motor control firmware for variable speed drive products
  • Assist in developing product specifications, architecture, schedules, design documents, DFMEA, safety agency certification and product release focusing on the firmware side of the product along with a hardware engineer.
  • Design, develop, and test electrical equipment, components, and systems to test firmware, characterize motors and user interface software as needed and assist in performance and qualification testing of variable speed motor drive products
  • Coordinate and execute design reviews, performance, qualification, and reliability test plan for embedded power electronics products
  • Assist in developing and documenting firmware test procedures and standards for engineering as needed
  • Review and interpret agency standards to ensure product compliance
  • Execute Engineering design Changes (ECNs) to support customers with product firmware/hardware changes, root cause analysis of fiend return, and any quality or manufacturing engineering-related activities throughout the life of the products
  • Perform competitive product analysis and assist in supplier selection and next generation new product development from a motor control perspective
  • Provide variable speed drive software product support to our customers
  • Play a highly independent technical firmware product engineering role in local and global work groups


REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • 7-10 years of engineering experience with an emphasis on embedded motor control firmware design and development or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experienced with different sensor-less motor control methods, PFC algorithms, and communication protocols
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to coordinate multiple tasks with a global team simultaneously
  • Skilled in organizing, prioritizing, and coordinating engineering activities with a product team within and outside of the organization
  • Ability and willingness to work with a global team and accommodate late evening meetings at least once a week
  • Skilled in organizing, prioritizing, and coordinating highly effective working relationships with all levels of personnel both inside and outside the engineering organization


PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCES & SKILLS:
  • Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • 10-12 years of engineering experience with an emphasis on embedded motor control firmware design and development or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated in-depth technical knowledge of power electronics hardware and embedded firmware design including micro-controllers, digital and analog circuits on several platforms highly preferred
  • Experience working with customers and safety agencies such as UL/VDE Experienced in EMI/EMC mitigation techniques.
  • Experience working with variable speed drives and auto motor characterization methods
  • In depth knowledge of multiple power electronics inverter and converter topologies, architectures and control a plus
  • Experience working with Matlab/Simulink, hardware in the loop simulation, schematic capture and simulation tools
