Full Job Description

Our Portfolio Analytics team will be free from the corporate financial calendar, aligned to regional business priorities and supporting underwriting decision-making when most needed. The Portfolio Analytics team will be comprised of analytics professionals with a wide range of technical skillsets, including actuaries, data scientists, implementation engineers, data engineers, and data visualization developers.

We envision a dynamic, underwriter-centered function that treats underwriters and regional leaders as its core customers - identifying trends early, delivering actionable insights built on reliable data, and embedding actuarial and predictive models into daily workflows.

In the Lead Business Intelligence Engineer role, you will lead a team that builds reporting tools and automations that provide real time insight to help support high-stakes decision making. This position will be responsible for creating high-quality reports and dashboards that allow Markel associates to effectively monitor their portfolio of business and key performance indicators (KPIs), as both a leader and a hands-on contributor. You will work closely with a team of data scientists, engineers, and analysts to enable the modernization and scalability of insights.

What we ask of you:

  • Lead Power BI Strategy & Design: Own the overall Power BI solution architecture and design principles for the team, ensuring reports and dashboards deliver strategic insights and actionable results for business stakeholders.
  • Team Leadership: Lead a small team of Power BI developers, providing clear direction, prioritizing workloads, delegating tasks, and fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Strategic Prioritization: Actively engage with business leaders and project stakeholders to understand business objectives, translate them into actionable data & analytics initiatives, and prioritize the team's workload.
  • Technical Expertise: Maintain deep expertise in the latest Power BI features, tools, and best practices, and share this knowledge with the team. Ensure solutions leverage advanced functionalities and performance optimization techniques.
  • Mentorship & Development: Mentor and coach team members on Power BI development, data modeling, SQL optimization, and effective communication of data insights.
  • Collaboration w/ Data Engineering: Work closely with data engineering and IT teams to ensure requirements and dependencies for refined data are clearly communicated and delivered, enabling accurate and reliable reporting and analytics.
  • Process Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities for process improvements, implement best practices, and establish robust testing and documentation standards.
  • Stakeholder Management: Effectively communicate features, capabilities, and progress to stakeholders at all levels.
  • Data Analysis & Modeling: Deeply understand Markel Specialty's data & analytics solutions to inform strategic decisions. Work with large data sets to identify trends and develop actionable solutions that support insurance product strategic priorities.
  • Quality Assurance: Define and enforce quality standards for deliverables, including functionality testing, performance testing, and user acceptance criteria.
  • Project Leadership: Contribute to the analysis and discussion of project work with leaders, peers, project management, and customer engagement.

What you will bring to the role:

  • Track record of delivering value to organizations through reporting and analytics, ideally in the Insurance Industry. Ability to influence and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Original thinking and creative problem-solving skills to any given situation, driving for improved processes, systems, products, or services so that Markel can establish and maintain a competitive edge.
  • Advanced ability to manipulate and analyze large, complex datasets; strong commercial acumen and understanding of Markel’s strategy.
  • Exceptional communication skills, capable of galvanizing support from a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into terms easily understood by non-technical stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a track record of identifying and implementing effective data-driven solutions.
  • A disciplined, energetic work ethic with a focus on high-impact priorities.

Key Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience: 6-8 years of relevant experience working with Business Intelligence technologies
  • Power BI Mastery: Deep, demonstrable expertise with Power BI, including visualization design, data modeling, DAX proficiency, and understanding of administrative functions.
  • Data Modeling: 4-8 years of hands-on data modeling experience in an enterprise environment.
