What will you be doing:IHCS is investing heavily in building and maintaining an agentic digital workforce -- AI systems that augment the key internal roles involved in our core business of coordinated home care benefits management. We already have several early-stage implementations of these workforce agents in production and in development, and we're ready to scale that work into a coordinated, well-engineered program.
The Lead AI Engineer will own the design, implementation, and ongoing operation of these agentic systems. This is a player/coach role: you'll be hands-on building and shipping agents yourself, while also growing and leading a small engineering team as it scales. You'll bring senior software engineering judgment to a fast-evolving space, with the freedom to set technical direction on architecture and stack.
We're looking for someone who is highly curious and genuinely energized by solving complex business problems through automation and AI - not technology for its own sake, but real solutions that get into production and deliver measurable business value.
What will you need to succeed:- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience delivering and maintaining production systems
- 1+ years of hands-on experience building and deploying LLM-powered or agentic systems that are live in production - not proof-of-concept or research-only work
- Experience evaluating and benchmarking multiple third-party LLM providers/models against each other for a given use case (e.g., accuracy, cost, latency, consistency) not training or fine-tuning custom model
- Experience shaping and transforming data for optimal model consumption (e.g., OCR/text extraction, structured-to-markdown conversion, chunking, summarization) and managing context window constraints to produce consistent agent outputs
- Strong experience with AWS
- Experience working in a regulated industry (healthcare, financial services, insurance, or similar), including navigating data privacy and compliance considerations (e.g., PHI handling, BAAs) when integrating third-party LLM providers
- Some experience leading, mentoring, or setting direction for other engineers, whether in a formal management role or informally as a senior/staff-level contributor
