Description & Requirements Position Summary The IT Principal Azure Architect serves as the organization's senior technical authority for Microsoft Azure, providing enterprise-level architectural vision, standards, and decision support for cloud platforms and SaaS services.
This role is accountable for ensuring Azure environments are secure, scalable, resilient, and cost-effective, aligned to the Azure Well-Architected Framework and organizational governance. Working across engineering, security, operations, and leaders, the IT Principal Azure Architect sets guardrails, reviews and approves designs, and drives continuous improvement of cloud capabilities and service reliability. What a typical week looks like
- Acts as the principal Azure architect and technical authority, providing guidance and decision support across architecture, governance, security, reliability, and operations.
- Leads architecture reviews for Azure solutions (applications and shared platforms), ensuring alignment with enterprise standards, target-state roadmaps, and Well-Architected principles.
- Defines and maintains enterprise reference architectures, design patterns, landing zone standards, and guardrails for Azure services.
- Provides technical leadership for major incidents, problems, and change activities affecting Azure-hosted workloads, including post-incident reviews and remediation planning.
- Establishes reliability practices for critical services, including SLOs, SLIs, SLAs, error budgets, and service ownership expectations.
- Champions observability standards and continuous improvement for monitoring and alerting using Azure Monitor, Application Insights, and Log Analytics.
- Partners with security teams to define and implement secure-by-design Azure solutions, including identity, network segmentation, secrets management, and data protection controls.
- Defines and governs Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and CI/CD approaches (Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions), promoting automation, repeatability, and policy compliance.
- Leads cost optimization and capacity planning practices, including FinOps guidance, scaling strategies, and architectural trade-off analysis.
- Owns and communicates cloud architecture standards and platform operating models (runbooks, support boundaries, and escalation paths) to technical teams and leadership.
- Stays current on the Azure roadmap and industry best practices, translating relevant changes into standards, patterns, and platform improvements.

What you bring
- Degree or diploma from an accredited university or college in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related IT discipline.
- 7+ years of experience in cloud engineering, platform operations, SRE, or architecture roles, including leading architecture decisions and standards across multiple teams.
- Extensive hands-on experience managing Azure environments at scale.
- Azure certifications are highly desirable, including:
- Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- Azure DevOps Engineer Expert
- Experience supporting multi-tenant SaaS platforms is an asset.
- A combination of education and experience will be considered
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Deep expertise in Microsoft Azure, including:
- Compute (App Service, AKS, Container Apps, Functions)
- Networking (VNets, Front Door, Application Gateway, Private Endpoints)
- Data services (Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Storage)
- Identity & security (Microsoft Entra ID, RBAC, Key Vault)
- Strong experience designing and governing highly available, production cloud environments at enterprise scale.

- Strong understanding of cloud security, governance, and compliance controls.
