Full Job Description
Description

We are seeking a HR Business Partner (HRBP) who strengthens people practices and supports leaders across Howard University Hospital by offering practical guidance, helping reinforce consistency across departments, and contributing to the development of foundational HR tools and processes.

This role combines relationship-building with hands-on problem solving. The HRBP partners closely with the Senior Manager, Talent Development & Business Partnerships and the broader HR team to support leaders, build simple and effective resources, and assist with occasional training or facilitation needs. This position requires a collaborative team player who works transparently and avoids siloed approaches.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build trusting relationships with leaders and staff and maintain regular visibility within assigned departments.

  • Provide practical guidance on routine people matters, including expectations setting, communication, coaching conversations, and team dynamics.

  • Help leaders apply consistent HR processes across onboarding, documentation, performance discussions, and communication routines.

  • Reinforce hospital policies, HR standards, and compliance expectations; escalate employee relations or legal concerns appropriately.

  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager to create simple tools, templates, checklists, and communication aids that help leaders strengthen consistency and clarity.

  • Pilot new practices with select departments, gather feedback, and recommend improvements.

  • Assist with delivering or cofacilitating training sessions as needed, including basic leadership, communication, or process related topics.

  • Conduct department check-ins, rounding, and listening sessions to surface needs and themes early.

  • Identify patterns, risks, and opportunities and share insights with the Senior Manager to support planning and decision making.

  • Maintain organized documentation and follow-up to ensure reliable, timely HR support.

  • Collaborate closely with HR colleagues to ensure aligned, consistent service delivery across departments-never working in isolation.

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 5=7 years of experience in HR generalist, HR support, or business partnership roles.

  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills with the ability to earn trust quickly.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate closely with others and operate as part of a team, not in silos.

  • Comfort working in environments where processes are evolving and still being developed.

  • Basic knowledge of HR policies, employment law, and good judgment on when to escalate issues.

  • Willingness to assist with and occasionally cofacilitate training.

Preferred

  • Experience in healthcare and/or unionized environments.

  • Experience supporting leaders in complex, fast paced settings.

  • Ability to identify themes or patterns from department interactions or basic workforce data.
