Description:

Position Summary:

The Health & Safety Advisor is responsible for ensuring that their assigned portfolio meets its statutory and regulatory obligations under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Workplace Safety Insurance Act. The Health & Safety Advisor is responsible for providing strategic advice and program development, conducting workplace assessments, investigating health and safety hazards and accidents, developing training programs, preparing reports, acting as a liaison and resource person for joint health and safety committees and interprets health and safety legislation for unionized and non-unionized staff, faculty and students. The Health & Safety Advisor also represents their assigned portfolio (i.e. Campus, major University function such as tri-campus construction projects) and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) in matters involving the Ministry of Labour (MOL), Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), grievance and arbitration meetings, investigations and inspections.

Qualification Required:

Education:

  • Master's Degree in Occupational Industrial Hygiene or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Canadian Registered Safety or occupational hygiene professional designation and Occupational Health and Safety certificate an asset.


Experience:

  • Five (5) years' relevant experience preferably in an academic environment, management experience developing and maintaining a Health and Safety program, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Experience providing strategic planning, advice and information to senior management relating to Ontario Health and Safety legislation.
  • Sound knowledge of applicable legislation, for example, OHSA, CFIA act and regulations and PHAC's guidelines.

  • Excellent consulting and advising skills, ability to negotiate, mediate, ability to influence others.
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, ability to use diplomacy and tact, and maintain confidentiality on sensitive matters, strong judgment.
