The New York Times Graphics team is looking for a reporter with extensive open-source and investigative reporting skills to turn raw evidence into impactful visual stories. You have a track record for uncovering exclusive information off the news.

The Graphics team is a leader in using spatial and visual techniques on investigative stories, and we're looking for someone who is passionate about accountability journalism using cutting-edge reporting techniques.

• An exclusive look at the failed columns of the Midtown Manhattan near-collapse
• A 3-D analysis of why firefighters' lines of sight were limited in the deadly LaGuardia Crash
• An investigation into the mass graves in Syria
• An investigation into the causes of a Miami building collapse
• A spatial investigation into a deadly fire in the Bronx
• A forensic analysis of an apartment building collapse in the Turkey earthquake

Working with journalists on the Graphics team and across the newsroom, you will play an important role in shaping visual reconstructions and investigations that rely on spatial analysis or use 3-D modeling. You will gather and analyze evidence for stories across a wide range of topics for both quick-turn stories as well as longer-term enterprise.

You will be expected to take the initiative in leading major storylines, with the goal of uncovering new or exclusive findings across multiple visual story formats. You should be curious and driven, and be comfortable with moving between solo deep dives and fast-paced, cross-desk collaborations.

This is an in-office position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days a week.

Responsibilities:

• Bring core OSINT fluency to the desk's coverage: geolocation, chronolocation, satellite/aerial imagery analysis, audio-video research, and more.
• Analyze a variety of data sources, including satellite and aerial imagery, flight/vessel tracking data, social media platforms and radio scanner data.
• Vet and build relationships with a network of sources on stories.
• Generate ideas that help the team develop custom tooling to automate open-source reporting for analyzing and visualizing evidence.
• Find new ways to report beyond the standard OSINT toolkit, by using computational techniques, including through machine learning, computer vision and approved AI tools.
• Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
• You will report to an Assistant Editor on the Graphics desk.

Basic Qualifications:

• 5+ years of relevant experience as an investigative reporter, open-source researcher or forensic expert.
• Proven experience conducting open-source investigations by sourcing audio and visual evidence across a variety of platforms.
• Experience producing accountability journalism, with a strong portfolio.
• Experience producing clear copy about the visual evidence on tight deadlines.
• Experience verifying user-generated content from social media for authenticity.
• Skilled in building timelines using a variety of sources, including official statements and metadata from user-generated content.
• Familiarity with open-source intelligence tools and techniques like Google Earth, satellite imagery platforms, scanner audio data, flight or vessel tracking, or similar.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working both independently and collaboratively while managing multiple research threads.
• Experience with advanced tools for reporting, such as QGIS, Blender for 3-D scene reconstructions, data analysis methods, audio and image forensics tools.
• Adept at creating clear, visual explainers piecing together complex findings.
• Familiarity with programming and custom tool development.
• Familiarity with Adobe Suite and Figma.
• Experience with web scraping tools and working with APIs.
• Experience using command line tools.
• Willingness and flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$113,945.85-$145,000 USD
