Purpose
The General Merchandise Manager is responsible for the overall operation, profitability, merchandising, inventory management, and staffing of the General Merchandise Department. This position oversees product categories such as health and beauty care, household goods, seasonal merchandise, toys, stationery, kitchenware, and other non-food merchandise as assigned. The GM Manager leads department employees, drives sales growth, ensures excellent customer service, and maintains attractive, well-stocked, and organized sales areas.
Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, coach, train, and develop General Merchandise Department employees, including Assistant GM Managers, GM Clerks, and other assigned associates.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and onboard new team members.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching and development.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and customer service excellence.
  • Create schedules that support operational needs while effectively managing labor costs.
Department Operations
  • Oversee daily operations of the General Merchandise Department.
  • Ensure merchandise is properly stocked, organized, priced, and displayed according to company standards.
  • Maintain department conditions that promote a clean, safe, and appealing shopping environment.
  • Coordinate product flow from receiving to sales floor.
  • Monitor department execution and ensure operational standards are consistently achieved.
Customer Service
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and promote a customer-focused culture.
  • Assist customers with product selection, product location, and special requests.
  • Resolve customer concerns and inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Ensure associates provide knowledgeable and courteous service.
Merchandising & Sales
  • Execute company merchandising programs, promotional events, and seasonal displays.
  • Ensure products are attractively displayed and properly signed.
  • Plan and implement seasonal merchandise transitions.
  • Monitor sales trends and adjust merchandising strategies to maximize sales opportunities.
  • Maintain strong in-stock conditions across all assigned product categories.
Inventory Management & Shrink Control
  • Manage ordering, receiving, inventory control, and replenishment activities.
  • Monitor inventory levels to ensure product availability.
  • Conduct inventory audits and investigate discrepancies.
  • Implement shrink reduction strategies and maintain inventory accuracy.
  • Ensure proper product rotation and handling procedures where applicable.
Financial Performance
  • Manage department sales, labor, expenses, and profitability.
  • Monitor key performance indicators and operational reports.
  • Develop and implement action plans to improve department performance.
  • Support store-wide financial and operational objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to increase sales and improve efficiency.
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety programs, and operational procedures.
  • Maintain a safe environment for customers and employees.
  • Ensure merchandise displays and storage areas meet safety standards.
  • Support loss prevention and asset protection initiatives.
  • Address safety concerns promptly and appropriately.
Seasonal & Promotional Management
  • Plan and execute seasonal resets and major merchandising transitions.
  • Coordinate promotional setups and special merchandising initiatives.
  • Ensure timely execution of advertisement and promotional programs.
  • Maintain display standards for seasonal and featured merchandise.
