Full Job Description
The opportunity

We're hiring an experienced Founding Product Designer to lead design across Hazel end-to-end: from everyday admin workflows (notes, meetings, inbox, tasks) to Hazel's most complex, specialized AI agents, including financial planning, estate planning, and pairing/planning tools.

This is an individual-contributor role and our first and lead designer for Hazel. You'll have the opportunity to re-imagine wealth management workflows in an AI-native format in close partnership with Product and Engineering, and help shape and maintain our design system. You'll be a strategic partner in product decisions, weighing in on where a feature lives, what discovery should look like, and how to scope and sequence the work.

Location: San Francisco • four days a week in-office

What you'll do
  • Design agentic workflows for real admin work
    • Own the end-to-end design experience across Hazel, from core admin surfaces like note-taking, inbox, and tasks to specialized, high-complexity AI agents such as financial planning, and investment analysis.
    • Design how Hazel captures context, summarizes information, follows up, asks clarifying questions, and takes action on a user's behalf, all while staying predictable, transparent, and trustworthy.
    • Invent new interaction patterns for AI-assisted work where traditional UI doesn't fit, blending automation, suggestions, and human control to reduce cognitive load without hiding important context.
  • Define how the agent communicates and collaborates
    • Design patterns for how Hazel signals progress, uncertainty, permissions, and handoffs across multi-step and asynchronous workflows.
    • Shape how Hazel explains what it's doing, why it's doing it, and what it needs from the user in a way that feels intuitive and trustworthy.
  • Iterate quickly as Hazel evolves
    • Design, test, and refine experiences in tight feedback loops as Hazel's capabilities expand with model improvements.
    • Work on critical-path features, adapting designs as the underlying agent becomes more capable and the product surface area grows.
  • Own and evolve the design system
    • Contribute to and maintain Ethos, our design system, ensuring pixel-perfect implementation and consistent interaction patterns across Hazel and the broader platform.
    • Obsess over the details that make tools feel calm, fast, and reliable: clear hierarchy, thoughtful defaults, crisp feedback loops, and minimal friction in day-to-day use.
  • Shape product decisions and work fluidly across disciplines
    • Design for a wide range of advisor tech-savviness, making complex agent workflows approachable without dumbing them down or overwhelming less technical users.
    • Sit at the table on product strategy: help decide where features live, what to build versus defer, and what discovery is needed before committing to a direction.
    • Pair with product marketing, brand, and engineers on implementation, and pressure-test ideas directly with users and design partners.

What you bring
  • 5+ years of experience in product design, with a focus on complex, multi-step workflows and end-to-end ownership from discovery through launch.
  • Strong interaction design fundamentals and a track record of shipping real products-not just concepts or prototypes.
  • A systems-level mindset for how features connect across a broad, complex product surface, and how those pieces should feel cohesive within one agent experience.
  • High craft bar and strong taste in interaction, UX writing, and visual hierarchy, with the portfolio to back it up.
  • Comfort designing in ambiguous problem spaces with evolving constraints and rapidly changing AI capabilities.
  • Product judgment beyond the pixels: ability to reason about scope and impact of design on the business.

Bonus points if you bring
  • Ability to prototype and build in code (e.g., HTML/CSS/JavaScript/TypeScript, React, or similar), and comfort working directly in front-end codebases.
  • Experience designing or building AI-powered or agentic products, especially those that automate or assist with complex knowledge work.
  • Background in productivity tools, admin workflows, financial planning, or advisor/knowledge work software.
  • Familiarity with design systems and front-end component libraries, ideally in React or similar ecosystems.

Before you apply

To be considered for this role, you must:
  • Provide a portfolio with clear, high-quality examples of shipped product work (not just mockups).
  • Include any passwords required to access your portfolio; password-protected portfolios without credentials cannot be reviewed.

Location & compensation

We are open to hiring a Senior or Staff-level Product Designer. Compensation includes base compensation and meaningful equity. Actual compensation will be based on experience, level, and location.
  • Senior: $175,000 - $225,000 base salary
  • Staff: $225,000 - $275,000 base salary

  • Professional growth and development opportunities including an employee mobility program and an annual L&D budget allocation for each employee.
  • Company perks program (includes discounts on pet insurance, fitness, cell phone plans, and travel, etc.).
  • Financial guidance program (includes counseling on navigating debt, tracking personal spend, saving and planning goals, home-purchasing preparedness, etc.).
  • One month work from anywhere policy (with the exception of a few countries).

Total compensation includes a competitive benefits package, along with a bonus program for eligible roles. For salaried positions, a salary offer will be determined by a number of factors including experience, skill level, internal pay equity, geographic location, and other relevant business considerations. We review all employee pay and compensation programs regularly to ensure fair, equitable, and competitive pay. At Altruist, we are committed to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation by leveraging market data to inform our pay bands. Base salaries will be reviewed at regular intervals throughout the year, typically in conjunction with performance review cycles. By evaluating compensation on a regular basis, we are able to reward high performance and ensure all employees have opportunities for growth.

Don't meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At Altruist we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you're excited about this role, but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
