Summary

A Data Center Chilled Water Expert (often titled as Critical Cooling Systems
Technician, Liquid Cooling SME, or Data Center Facilities Engineer) is responsible for
the technical authority, maintenance, and optimization of large-scale chilled water and
liquid cooling systems that protect critical production.

Detailed Description
• System Maintenance & Operations: Perform advanced preventive, predictive, and
corrective maintenance on 2000 ton air-cooled/water-cooled chillers, pumps,
cooling towers, piping networks and associated control systems.
• Advanced Liquid Cooling: Act as the primary technical authority for rack cooling,
Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs), Liquid cooled rack fans and Roof Top Units
(RTUs).
• Water Chemistry Management: Monitor and maintain technical water chemistry
to prevent corrosion and biological growth, conducting regular fluid sampling and
pH/conductivity testing.
• Troubleshooting & Incident Response: Execute rapid fault isolation for
cooling-related alarms and performance deviations
• Optimization & Efficiency: Analyze temperature, pressure, and delta-T metrics to
optimize system PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and energy efficiency.
• Vendor & Project Oversight: Supervise third-party service providers during major
repairs (e.g., chiller teardowns) and support commissioning for new
infrastructure.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies
• Experience: Typically 5-10 years of hands-on experience in data centers,
Computing facilities, or heavy industrial cooling
• Technical Knowledge: Deep proficiency in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics,
hydronic balancing, and control schematics.
• Preferred Certifications:
• Certified HVAC Process Cooling
• EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Handling.
• Manufacturer-specific training on major chiller brands (e.g., York, Johnson
Controls, Schneider Electric).

Physical Demands

  • Duties of the position are performed in a manufacturing environment with frequent exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, operating machinery, temperature extremes, hazardous substances, etc.
  • Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
  • Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.
