The Role

The Facilities Engineer is responsible for the reliable, safe, and cost-effective operation, maintenance, and improvement of plant facilities and utilities (e.g., electrical distribution, HVAC, building systems) in support of manufacturing operations. They provide technical expertise, lead preventive and corrective maintenance activities, support projects, and ensure compliance with GM standards, codes, and safety requirements.

What You'll Do (Role Responsibilities)
  • Attend daily facilities huddles, weekly coordination meetings, weekend planning meetings, and monthly site electrical/facility issue reviews to align priorities, resources, and outage work.
  • Communicate status of facility systems, open issues, and planned work to maintenance, operations, and leadership.
  • Lead and direct activities and assignments for the high voltage electrician.
  • Support facilities maintenance with troubleshooting of plant equipment and facility systems (e.g., power distribution, substations, HVAC, utilities, powerhouse equipment, piping, etc. ) to restore operations safely and quickly.
  • Respond to facility emergencies as needed (power events, equipment failures, environmental incidents, other utility failures) and coordinate corrective actions with trades and outside service providers.
  • Create switching and lockout plans to facilitate maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Assist in performing switching/lockout plans and ensure work is completed correctly.
  • Perform and/or coordinate preventive maintenance for substations, feeders, and other critical facility systems, including major shutdown work (e.g., substation/feeder PMs during plant outages).
  • Perform and/or coordinate preventative maintenance for powerhouse, waste water treatment facilities, and other facilities related equipment and infrastructure.
  • Write and review preventive and corrective maintenance work orders to ensure they effectively mitigate risk and protect assets.
  • Lead the site Electrical Safety program as the champion of performance standard 4 (PS4) and site electrical subject matter expert.
  • Design, make, and review lockout placards and procedures to support energy control (LOTO).
  • Verify compliance with applicable codes and standards for facility modifications and maintenance activities.
  • Calculate arc-flash data and create/update arc-flash labels for new or modified equipment.
  • Use AutoCAD and Maximo to maintain facility and equipment drawings and records.
  • Participate in or lead facilities projects (electrical distribution, HVAC, roofs, roadways, etc.), including technical scoping, coordination with operations, and support during installation/startup.
  • Plan and submit capital projects to ensure the site equipment, buildings and infrastructure are maintained in good working order.
  • Develop and write scope of work documents for projects as required. Submit requests for quote and review and select winning bidder based on the scope of work documents.
  • Arrange and escort outside service providers, review their plans, and ensure adherence to GM safety, quality, and engineering requirements.
  • Create, manage, and track purchase requests for facilities materials, spare parts, and contracted services.
  • Locate and procure parts and technical information for plant equipment and facility systems.


Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience required.
  • 3+ years experience in facilities engineering or maintenance.
  • Electrical distribution (e.g., 13.8 kV, 4160 and 600 V equipment maintenance and repair).
  • Electrical engineering fundamentals and PLC programming (for interfacing with equipment controls).
  • HVAC operation (heating, ventilation, AC), chiller operation, UPS and generator maintenance.
  • Understanding of roofing, roadway repair, and general facility systems.
  • AutoCAD for drawings.
  • Maximo and Archibus for facility management.
  • Cimplicity (EMS) for energy/utility monitoring.
  • SAP for maintenance/ordering.
  • ESWP (Electrical Safe Work Practices).
  • Lockout/Tagout, fall hazard, construction safety and effectiveness, PDPM small construction process.
  • Hazardous material abatement and relevant codes/standards for facilities work.
  • This is a 1st shift role but must be able to work off shifts when required.
