The New York City Council's Progressive Caucus (PC) consists of 23 of the 51 members of the City Council. The PC is dedicated to creating a more just and equitable New York City and advancing public policies that prioritize working New Yorkers over corporate interests; fighting economic, racial, and social inequities; and advancing civil liberties. The PC is committed to helping progressives, inside and outside of City Hall, work together to more effectively achieve our collective goals.
The PC seeks a full-time Executive Director to facilitate operations and strategize on behalf of the bloc. The Director reports directly to Caucus Co-Chairs and Vice Co-Chairs. The Director will work with members of the Caucus and their staff to develop, organize, and execute legislative and budget agendas, and to amplify existing campaigns. The Director will work collaboratively with legislators, government agencies, community groups, and other stakeholders to support the Caucus's legislative and budget priorities. This is a management level position.
SALARY RANGE : $86,819 to $86,819
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Policy & Budget Advocacy: - Develop, research and advocate for a policy agenda, legislative packages, and budget proposals based on Caucus consensus and priorities.
- Interface with external stakeholders on behalf of the Caucus.
- Organize Caucus actions such as rallies, briefings, and community events related to priority issues.
Communications Strategy: - Create communications assets for the Caucus including talking points, sign-on letters, visuals, and media toolkits.
- Draft public-facing materials inclusive of statements, quotes, reports, and releases as well as field inquiries from members of the press.
- Maintain an effective social media presence, manage Caucus website, and promote Caucus activity.
- Develop critical communication with stakeholders, advocates, allies, and external stakeholders collaborating with the Caucus.
Internal Administration & Organizing - Representing the Caucus at events and meetings with various stakeholders.
- Schedule monthly Caucus meetings along with relevant activity including drafting agendas, sending notices, facilitating discussion, and executing follow-up.
- Coordinate regular communication between members' offices on shared priorities to ensure cohesion within the Caucus.
- Plan strategic engagements including policy meetings, retreats, conferences, agency meetings, and social events for Caucus members and staff.
- Maintain records in the office and manage a team of undergraduate- and graduate-level interns.
QUALIFICATIONS: - Two to four years of full-time experience working in government with management and/or administration, legislative affairs, public affairs, non-profits, or community organizations. Preferably with a specific focus on New York City government.
- Knowledge of New York City politics, government and current issues.
- Undergraduate degree in public management, political science, public policy, management, communications, non-profit management, economics, and/or equivalent work experience in these areas.
- Detail-oriented, strong organizational skills, ability to oversee multiple projects, and coordinate multiple busy schedules.
- Excellent writing skills and communications strategy expertise.
- Ability to oversee multiple projects, a team of part-time staff, multi-task and coordinate multiple member schedules.
- Strong attention to detail and robust organizational skills.
- Bilingualism and/or a graduate degree in the aforementioned areas of study are preferred but not required.
