What You Will Do

The Project Manager is an integral member of our Building Solutions North America business at Johnson Controls. This role involves leading large, complex, and multi-million-dollar Controls construction projects in data centers across the U.S. This position operates remotely within the U.S. but requires travel to customer sites, including data centers, as necessitated by project demands, potentially up to 50% or more at times.

Under general direction, the Project Manager is responsible for the profitable execution of assigned projects within data centers. This role involves early collaboration with sales managers, installation managers, and project teams to strategize, assess risks, and provide recommendations on vendor selection and scope enhancements. The Project Manager ensures projects are completed accurately, on time, within budget, and within contract scope, while maintaining positive cash flow and pursuing opportunities for change orders. Compliance with legal and safety standards is paramount, and the role requires adherence to consistent project management procedures and processes, balancing customer satisfaction with financial results.

How You Will Do It
  • Act as the primary on-site leader for execution teams, developing and managing project schedules to ensure alignment with project plans.
  • Evaluate contractual scopes of work and manage impacts from client-issued bulletins or scheduling changes, pursuing additional work opportunities through change orders.
  • Manage costs, billings, and collections, ensuring timely and accurate project billings to maintain profitability and positive cash flow.
  • Communicate project progress, issues, and financial status effectively to management, applying tools such as Microsoft Project for risk evaluation and job progress tracking.
  • Ensure project document controls meet contract requirements and company standards, overseeing construction compliance with specifications and installation techniques.
  • Maintain long-term relationships with stakeholders, coordinating project meetings and training sessions to align project activities with customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams for resource allocation, engineering, and commissioning, ensuring alignment with project objectives.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and integrity by ensuring all safety standards are enforced among staff and subcontractors.

What We Look For
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or Architecture, or equivalent work-related experience.
  • Minimum eight years of direct project management experience in building construction, with a preference for experience in data centers.
  • Management experience in Mechanical Retrofits, HVAC controls, BAS management, Fire management, and Security management systems within data centers.
  • Commitment to obtaining PMI/PMP certification within two years of employment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in project management and financial accounting software, with advanced skills in MS Office, Adobe Writer, and Visio.
  • Willingness to travel 10%, varying by project assignments, including outside assigned geography when necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects involving multiple subcontractors and scopes of work.
  • Experience handling diverse challenges across multiple subject areas, showcasing problem-solving and continuous improvement capabilities.
