Enterprise Data Modeler - Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking an Enterprise Data Modeler who will play a key role in advancing our organization's data modeling practices and ensuring semantic consistency in business information and systems. This senior individual contributor role will be instrumental in developing our business information model and transforming it into both conceptual and logical data designs, guaranteeing smooth integration across various systems, platforms, and analytical environments - including our Data Hub built on medallion architecture.

You will oversee the standardization and semantic alignment of data definitions among various business units, direct the conversion of system-level data into models suitable for enterprise use, and assist with integration into the analytics platform. This strategic and technically demanding position involves close collaboration between business and technology teams to promote consistency, build trust in data, and maintain model integrity throughout the organization.

What your day-to-day will look like:
  • Define and evolve the Enterprise Business Information Model in close partnership with business stakeholders, ensuring it reflects core business concepts, relationships, and semantics across domains.
  • Translate the Business Information Model into conceptual and logical data models, enabling consistent, scalable design for transactional, operational and analytics integration.
  • Drive semantic alignment across business and technical teams, maintaining shared data definitions, taxonomies and supporting the adoption of a unified enterprise vocabulary.
  • Coordinate with the Data and Solution Practice Leads to embed modeling standards, naming conventions, and metadata practices into the enterprise data architecture framework.
  • Collaborate with project Data Modellers and Architects to ensure solutions are aligned with enterprise data models; provide oversight to harmonize delivery with strategic design.
  • Support Lakehouse data architecture implementation, ensuring logical models are translated into usable data structures across ingestion (raw), curation (trusted), and consumption (refined) layers, collaborating with data engineers and architects to translate logical models into analytics data architecture implementations (Data Lakehouse using Databricks).
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on data modeling practices, mentoring architects and analysts, and contributing to the continuous improvement of modeling methodologies, tools, and processes.
  • Contribute to architecture governance, participating in design reviews and modeling forums to ensure solutions remain compliant with enterprise data principles.

What we're looking for in you:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in enterprise data modeling, including leading organization-wide conceptual and logical model development initiatives.
  • Proven ability to define and evolve business information models by working directly with domain experts, ensuring alignment between business semantics and enterprise data design.
  • Expertise in enterprise modeling tools such as ER/Studio, Microsoft Visio, or equivalent, with a strong track record of producing clear, reusable data models for both strategic planning and delivery enablement.
  • Experience applying data modeling practices within complex, regulated environments - preferably in the energy, oil and gas, or government sector - where data consistency, lineage, and governance are critical.
  • Demonstrated leadership in establishing and promoting enterprise modeling standards, including naming conventions, metadata structure, and semantic consistency, in collaboration with data architecture and governance teams.
  • Strong communicator and facilitator with the ability to influence senior stakeholders, bridge gaps between business and technical teams, and mentor others in modeling best practices.

Additional Information:
  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
  • This position will be subject to pre-employment background screening, including a criminal record check.
  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email [redacted]. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

What we offer you:

  • Defined benefit pension plan(s)

About Energy Resources Conservation Board

The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) was an independent, quasi-judicial agency of the Government of Alberta. It regulated the safe, responsible, and efficient development of Alberta's energy resources: oil, natural gas, oil sands, coal, and pipelines. The ERCB's mandate was to ensure that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta's energy resources took place in a manner that was fair, responsible, and in the public interest. The ERCB was dissolved in 2013 and its functions were transferred to the Alberta Energy Regulator.
