I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The Enterprise Business Intelligence and Data Governance Analyst serves as a strategic partner to the Human Resources (HR) Division, enabling data-driven decision-making through modern business intelligence, data governance, and AI-enabled analytics capabilities.
This role is responsible for designing and delivering trusted, business-friendly data products, advancing data quality and governance practices, and enabling HR stakeholders to self-serve insights through intuitive dashboards, semantic data models, and natural language query tools.

As part of the Business Intelligence Services (BIS) team, the Analyst plays a key role in preparing the University's BI ecosystem for the future by incorporating AI-driven analytics, automated insights, and conversational data access, while ensuring compliant, responsible and secure use of sensitive HR data.

Key Responsibilities
Business Intelligence Development & Delivery
  • Design, develop, and maintain HR-focused dashboards, reports, and data products aligned with business priorities
  • Translate business questions into scalable BI solutions, ensuring usability, performance, and adherence to enterprise standards
  • Develop and manage curated datasets and semantic data models that enable consistent reporting and analytics across HR
  • Ensure BI deliverables align with institutional data definitions, standards, and governance practices

HR Domain Partnership
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to HR leadership on workforce analytics, reporting strategy, and data interpretation, translating HR business needs into actionable data and analytics solutions
  • Develop deep expertise in HR processes, data structures, and compliance requirements (e.g., workforce planning, talent lifecycle, compensation, and regulatory reporting)
  • Enable HR stakeholders to independently explore and analyze data through governed, user-friendly BI tools and datasets
  • Design and maintain self-service data environments that promote a "single source of truth"
  • Develop and deliver training to improve data literacy, including how to interpret dashboards and ask effective data questions
  • Support adoption of natural language querying tools, enabling users to interact with data conversationally

AI-Enabled Analytics & Innovation
  • Design and optimize BI solutions to support natural language query capabilities (e.g., conversational BI tools and Microsoft Copilot)
  • Build and maintain semantic data models that translate complex HR data into intuitive business metrics and definitions
  • Leverage AI-powered analytics to identify trends, anomalies, and predictive insights in workforce data
  • Evaluate and pilot emerging BI and AI technologies to continuously improve analytics capabilities
  • Ensure ethical, secure, and compliant use of AI, particularly when working with sensitive HR data

Data Governance & Quality
  • Maintain and enhance metadata repositories, business glossaries, and data definitions
  • Partner with data stewards and stakeholders to improve data quality, integrity, and consistency
  • Define, monitor, and report on data quality metrics and remediation processes
  • Promote adherence to data governance policies related to confidentiality, compliance, and responsible data usage

Collaboration & Delivery
  • Participate in Agile/SCRUM processes and contribute to iterative delivery of BI solutions
  • Facilitate cross-functional discussions to resolve data issues and align on data standards and definitions
  • Act as a liaison between business stakeholders and technical teams to ensure successful delivery of analytics initiatives
  • Support enterprise data governance initiatives and committees

This position is based at GW's Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn, VA, with potential travel to the Foggy Bottom campus in Washington, DC, or remote work as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with AI-enabled BI tools (e.g., Microsoft Fabric, Power BI Copilot, Tableau AI) is desired
  • Familiarity with natural language query optimization and conversational analytics is preferred
  • Experience implementing or supporting self-service BI environments is desired
  • Understanding of augmented analytics (e.g., automated insights, anomaly detection, forecasting) is preferred
  • Knowledge of data privacy regulations and best practices related to HR data
  • Experience with business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, or similar)
  • Strong SQL and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Strong understanding of data modeling, including development of semantic or curated data layers
  • Demonstrated experience working with HR data domains (e.g., workforce, payroll, recruiting, or related areas)
  • Knowledge of data governance, data quality management, and metadata practices
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions and data products
    Strong communication, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills

$64,048.99 - $118,899.97
