Engineering Manager, Hub Cloud Services

Description

The Hub Cloud Services (HCS) team operates at a massive scale, processing billions of events and millions of smart home users' commands each day. We design and maintain ultra-fast event and command pipelines so that cloud automation feels seamless and immediate. Additionally, our team manages the core APIs and tools that help power SmartThings hubs, which serve as the backbone of millions of smart homes around the world. Our infrastructure serves as a vital foundation for many teams throughout SmartThings.

Key Responsibilities

This position is a hybrid role, based onsite 3 days a week at our office in Minneapolis, MN.

In this role, your primary responsibilities will include the following:
  • Lead the engineering team in developing key features for high-volume, mission-critical services
  • Uphold architectural standards and encourage elegant system designs that focus on scalability, efficiency, reliability, and performance
  • Keep up with and drive adoption of emerging technology through experimentation and hands-on learning
  • Manage and mentor engineers, conduct regular check-ins, assess performance and deliver actionable, constructive feedback to support career growth
  • Cultivate an engineering culture centered on strong ownership, cross-functional partnership, and reliable, high-quality delivery
  • Set an example by regularly tracking fleet metrics and operational performance to maintain high standards of quality and efficiency
  • Direct initiatives across various organizations and international teams
  • Partner with technical leads and other engineering managers to define and refine the overarching vision across Hub and Cloud organizations
  • Drive strategic direction and roadmap planning for the team that aligns with overall company goals


Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

What You Bring On Day One (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience building web services and cloud systems at scale
  • 3+ years leading software engineering teams, including performance management and career development
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multidisciplinary teams with varying skill sets and technical focuses
  • Effective leadership skills - driving project scope, setting deliverables, and communicating context to stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of large-scale system design, cloud deployments, database architectures, security, and performance optimization

Base compensation range for this position is $146,000 to $198,000 annually. Actual base within this range will depend on many factors including experience, skills, technical expertise and market alignment. In addition, this role is eligible for a 20% annual target bonus based heavily on individual performance.
