Full Job Description

GFL Environmental Inc. is looking for an Engineering and Compliance Manager to join our Ontario Environmental Compliance Team. Reporting to the VP of Environmental Risk Management, this position will support compliance and capital projects. In this role, the Engineering and Compliance Manager will also support the broader objectives of the Eastern Canada Solids operations and the Canadian Environmental Compliance Team as required. The work location will be predominantly in the Hamilton and Greater Toronto Area.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage environmental and capital projects, including issuing RFPs, reviewing submissions, recommending consultants/contractors, managing budgets and timelines, and ensuring project delivery

  • Assist with regulatory submissions, including applications for approvals, amendments, renewals, and financial assurance

  • Liaise with local, regional, and provincial environmental regulators and other stakeholders

  • Stay up to date with regulatory changes that may affect permits and/or compliance status of facilities and operations

  • Provide technical and engineering support for operations and project delivery, including:

    • Monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) for environmental and capital projects

    • Supporting the development of business cases for new projects and practices

  • Engage and manage external consultants, contractors, and internal subject matter experts to provide technical support

  • Support the development of capital estimates and other financial metrics to inform maintenance capital planning, compliance risk reduction, and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Support the development of capital estimates for five-year and annual budget processes

  • Support Operations and the Regional Environmental Compliance Manager to ensure proper management of environmental projects once completed

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:
  • Post-secondary education in environmental, water, or wastewater engineering, or a related field

  • 5–7 years of experience in a related field (greater experience is considered an asset)

  • Experience in the solid waste and wastewater sectors is considered an asset

  • Strong data collection, processing, and management skills with a high level of attention to detail

  • Critical thinking skills to support decision-making by assessing environmental and engineering data and operational needs

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and concisely to audiences with varying technical backgrounds (e.g., operations, sustainability, engineering, finance, leadership, regulators, and other stakeholders)

  • Strong influencing skills to elicit cooperation and build consensus in the implementation of monitoring processes, capital projects, and risk management plans

  • Knowledge of industry-wide environmental policies, practices, and regulatory frameworks

  • Field experience with environmental monitoring and compliance

  • Valid G driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and the ability to travel to various locations
