Overview

Who we're looking for

Toyota's Powertrain Design (PDE) team is looking for a passionate, highly-motivated Design Engineer with an interest in Driveline systems to help develop a multitude of torque transferring components.

Within the first two years, the primary responsibilities of this role are to support the design of Driveline components for all vehicle types, including Electrified Powertrains by: Collaborating with stakeholders, such as suppliers, Purchasing, Toyota manufacturing plants, Vehicle Design groups, and Toyota Japan through:
  • Simultaneous Engineering with potential suppliers, including visits to their manufacturing plant.
  • Issue of Toyota owned drawings and/or supplied parts specifications.
  • Working with Supplier and Vehicle Plants to support trials and ensure a smooth product/vehicle launch.
  • Working with customer facing groups to ensure no issues for customer vehicles.
  • Working with North America Manufacturing Centers and local NA suppliers to improve driveline quality by identifying customer issues, investigating root causes, and implementing counter-measures.
  • Support Toyota by investigating how to make the driveline system while maintaining quality.


Reporting to the Driveline Design Manager, the person in this role will support the PDE department's objective to build "World Class Powertrains in North America"

What you'll be doing

  • Creating validated 3D models, 2D drawings, and supplier spec sheets utilizing the standard design process.
  • Leading Design Reviews for your responsible parts to show how your design achieves its function and targets.
  • Developing counter-measures to gaps such as cost, mass, durability, strength, and warranty rate based on data and engineering mindset.
  • Building relationships with key stakeholders (such as vehicle design, TMC driveline design, Supplier Development teams, purchasing, and assembly plants).
  • Managing NA suppliers to ensure on-time delivery of quality parts in line with the requirements of each Toyota milestone.
  • Improving PDE's design process capability to improve quality and on-time delivery.
  • Benchmarking similar designs to improve our customer experience and cost.
  • Training in the Toyota Way.


What you bring

  • Bachelor of Science (or above) with a Mechanical Engineering degree or other technical disciplines.
  • Experience utilizing CAD tools and applying GD&T to support product design and manufacturability.
  • Experience in the detailed design and release of prototype and production component drawings and supplier spec sheets.
  • Knowledge of typical automotive manufacturing methods (i.e. Aluminum and Iron Castings, Forgings, Machining, Thermoplastics, and Rubber Molding).
  • Experience with a level of proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong knowledge of conventional, hybrid and electrified drivelines.
  • Periodically and peak periods you must be willing to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%.
  • Current working schedule adheres to the Toyota return to office policy. Onsite presence Monday - Thursday, and the option for remote Friday.


Added bonus if you have

  • Minimum of 2+ years in Automotive Design/Development.
  • Hands-on experience with driveline/powertrain assemblies.
  • Detailed knowledge Propeller Shafts, Transfer Case, Driveshafts, and Differentials.
  • Experience with Catia, FEA, Vehicle NVH, and Vehicle Simulations.
  • Working knowledge of Design Review by Failure Mode (DRBFM.)
  • A working knowledge of Quality Management and Supply Chain Management principles.
  • Team-oriented thinking and a "can-do" attitude.
