Job Summary

The Outage Planning Eng (Assc - Sr) role is responsible to the assigned manager for performing entry level to more advanced engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.

Job Description

What You'll Do:
  • Oversee daily tasks such as outage approvals, outage planning discussions
  • Be engaged in Transmission Planning projects and the outage planning processes
  • Conduct ad hoc studies to better gain awareness of the changing Transmission system.
  • Ensure coverage over critical outage periods and balance work schedules.

Outage Planning Engineering:
  • Daily tasks such as outage approvals, ad-hoc outage analysis, month-ahead studies.
  • Be engaged in RTO activities to increase awareness of industry changes/impacts.
  • Coordinate with Transmission and Distribution Planning departments on outages and operational settings.
  • Advocate for operational needs with Engineering and Engineering Standards groups.
  • Support regulatory compliance efforts.
  • Document best practices, processes, and operational guides.
  • Coordinate needs and support needs of the Transmission Dispatch Center (TDC) and System Control Center (SCC) as needed.
  • Act as liaison between real-time desks (TDC/SCC), and all AEP planning teams, engineering, construction management, and maintenance groups engaged in capital improvement efforts.


Technical Expertise:
  • Possesses technical knowledge of power flow concepts and familiarity with power flow tools such as PSS/E, MUST and/or TARA is preferred.
  • Technical knowledge of short-circuit modeling software such as ASPEN/CAPE is preferred.
  • Knowledge of AEP Transmission system topology (PJM/MISO/SPP/ERCOT) footprint is a plus.

Leadership and Guidance:
  • Coordinates work activities of others within the team, works autonomously, or other corporate entity as necessary to perform routine engineering work.
  • Performs routine engineering activity independently.
  • Ensures all work activities are performed in accordance with the policies, practices, standards and rules of the company and complies with the regulations and procedures required by external agencies.
  • Provides training and guidance to lower-level employees.

Planning and Organizational Ability:
  • Participates in the development of plans by establishing measurable goals, objectives and requirements for specific areas of responsibility.
  • Coordinates the development of input necessary to establish projected cost of all projects.
  • Identifies and initiates appropriate corrective action when objectives are not being met.

Problem Solving and Initiative:
  • Resolves and initiates solutions to routine and/or moderately complex problems which usually require additional definition/clarification before analysis can begin.
  • Identifies problems that are beyond the normal routine.
  • Seeks out opportunities and embrace new ideas and approaches.

Communication Skills:
  • Coordinates the work of other engineers in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Develops, reviews or prepares reports on complex technical subjects clearly, concisely and effectively, in a manner suitable for presentation to management, professional societies, regulatory bodies, etc.
  • Leads and facilitates meetings effectively.

Interpersonal Skills:
  • Possess collaborative and consensus building skills.
  • Functions as a team leader and member. Networks upward and downward in several disciplines inside and outside the AEP system.
  • Leverages network to get things done.


Note: This position is posted at multiple grade levels and offers a range of opportunities for advancement. The minimum qualifications outlined below apply to the Engineer/Engineering Technologist Assc level, with increased educational, skill, experience and certification requirements for higher level Engineers.

What We're Looking For:
  • This is an entry level position for new graduates with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*;
  • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination in preparation for future licensing as a Professional Engineer (PE) is encouraged and preferred.
  • Individuals with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology can satisfy this degree requirement as an Engineering Technologist Associate

*VP or above may waive the requirement for a degree from a university with a non-ABET accredited program.
