Full Job Description
In this position, you will work within a mission portfolio to support the Space Vehicle Engineering team with new business pursuits through architecture trades, system definition, development, study, early requirements definition, customer interactions and transitions to execution. This work is led by a Strategic Business Unit (SBU) with engineering support to define the proposal submission delivering a system that meets our customers' technical performance specifications and their mission needs. This is a challenging, fast-paced job which will be exciting and highly gratifying for the successful candidate. What You'll Do: • As the Space Vehicle Architect assigned to a mission area, you are the technical representative of the SV Engineering team to the mission area (i.e., Civil Space, National Space, or Military Space). This role includes interfacing external customers and partners providing solutions for Spacecraft Bus and Space Vehicles, as a technical representative to company program office, external customers, and partners which may include payload, launch, and ground systems providers. • Develop a positive and collaborative relationship with the portfolio Leadership, Capture Managers and other internal team members - meeting their needs in a timely manner. • Become an integral part of the of the capture team providing input on overall strategy and support to specific pursuits. • Participate in architecture development and identifying needs for internal research and development to ensure BAE Systems capabilities are being maintained in support of mission needs as well as changes in technology/supplier base. • Work in a dynamic environment with multiple groups, interfaces, and all Spacecraft subsystems. • Author RFI/RFP sections and participate as a member of RFI/RFP red/gold team or review teams for other mission areas. • Lead preparation and execution of major design and readiness reviews. • Assist and be part of the New Business team to deliver presentations, RFIs responses and proposals by providing descriptions of capabilities, assessments of risks (cost, schedule, technical) and recommendations for proposed solutions at the SV level with focus on heritage and future capability plans to influence requirements or mission concepts in advance of the RFx steps. • Ensure pursuits are aligning with the Elevation™ Product Line and focus on high reuse. Ensuring alignment with reuse and maximizing reuse. • Provide leadership to the system engineering staff generating engineering documents including specifications, interface control documents, test plans, and prioritization. • Lead a team of SV leads within the portfolio, manage their workloads and work with Functional Management to increase or decrease staff to support new pursuits. • Develop new business training material for onboarding support staff in support of your mission area. • Participate in IRADs and other department initiatives. • Develop and manage the Space Vehicle technical baseline. • Develop and coach other systems engineers on the Space Vehicle team, including writing their reviews. • Responsibility Defined: • It is expected that a SV Architect will be well-versed and have a proven track record in leadership skills, including storytelling, communication, negotiation, and, above all, influence. Continuing to improve these skills is a must! • First level of engagement supporting direct customer interactions, identifying Spacecraft Bus and SV solutions, supporting pursuits, and providing feedback from the mission area back to the department capability road map. Bring back info to the department for technical feedback on industry and capability. • You will transition a pursuit post ATP to a Chief Engineer and a Space Vehicle Lead while working closely with the Space Vehicle Lead and Chief Engineer who is responsible to ensure the company delivers a system that meets our customers' technical performance specifications and mission needs. • You will have the opportunity to follow a pursuit into execution. If you choose to move away from the SV Architect role, it is required to have an adequate replacement that has been vetted with SV Systems Engineering leadership and trained in all aspects of the SV role and responsibilities. • While executing programs you will support the Space Vehicle Engineering team through development, test, and delivery of highly capable space systems. • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule. • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment. • Perform other duties as necessary. On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site three or more days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required. Working Conditions: • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment. • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required. • May access other facilities in various weather conditions. Short-Term Incentive: Subject to business performance and recommendations of management, this role may be eligible to participate in an incentive compensation plan. Required Skills and Education • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 12 or more years related experience. • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education. • A current, active Top-Secret security clearance is required with ability to obtain and maintain TS/SCI. • Demonstrated experience in systems engineering processes, including requirements development, requirement allocation, change management, verification and validation - a self-starter that will own this activity. • Demonstrated experience leading multi-disciplinary teams including meeting cost, schedule, and performance goals. • Customer Relationships: Knowledge of missions and customers across core technologies areas. • Superb presentation skills with experience to senior decision making and technical audiences. #LI-MA2 Preferred Skills and Education • Working knowledge of Earned Value Management (EVM) - CAM experience. • Model-Based Systems Engineering expertise. • 16 or more years related experience in either mission systems, spacecraft systems, ground systems or payloads. • Technical Vision and Leadership: A successful candidate will provide technical leadership and vision to drive the development and implementation of innovative solutions, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives. • Emotional Intelligence and Interpersonal Skills: A successful candidate will possess high emotional intelligence, with excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
