Full Job Description
The Engineering Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory invites internal applications for the EM Lead Technologist. In this role, you will independently perform broad and varied technical support in the field of electronics and electrical technology. You will perform complex assignments, exercise independent judgment, and develop work plans and methods to achieve desired results while applying broad, varied, and specialized knowledge of electronics theory and practice. Additionally, you will demonstrate effective leadership skills and specialized expertise to lead a technical team in support of booster storage rings, beamline systems, and related scientific research apparatus.

The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility that produces exceptionally bright soft and hard x-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared light. With a strong scientific reputation, expert staff, and advanced capabilities, the ALS attracts thousands of academic and industrial users each year in condensed matter and quantum materials, energy sciences, biosciences, earth and planetary sciences and more.

The ALS is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve 15,000 users annually. Co-located with the Molecular Foundry, NERSC supercomputing center, and Berkeley Lab's materials, chemical sciences, biosciences, and other divisions, it provides an ideal collaborative environment for innovative scientific discoveries.

You will:
  • Plan work and work flow for a team of technologists. Interface with scientific and engineering staff to identify and prioritize work. Develop instructions and assign duties, and monitor work progression and work quality.
  • Test, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot equipment processes or systems associated with booster storage rings, beamline systems, and related scientific research apparatus.
  • Apply substantial knowledge and expertise in electrical theory, scientific principles, and technical mathematics to effectively and efficiently carry out assignments.
  • Lead technical teams in delivering on complex tasks. Organize and plan work efforts for team members for effective and efficient delivery of results. Oversee technical areas in terms of safety and appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Provide mentoring and training of junior technicians, and guidance on their technical training and progression. Develop and maintain records for equipment and facilities operation and maintenance.
  • Support and/or lead the development of general specifications, work plans and methods, and lead component, tooling, diagnostics equipment to achieve desired results.


We are looking for:
  • Substantial technical background in electrical technology with the ability to successfully accomplish assignments by exercising independent judgment under only general guidance and limited supervision.
  • Ability to develop and implement work plans for complex technical systems involving teams of technologists. Effective communication and leadership skills to guide and direct technical teams.
  • Knowledge, skill and experience performing general set-ups, testing, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, operation and maintenance of complex mechanical, electromechanical and scientific apparatus, equipment and systems. Work experience in testing and measuring complex electronic systems and equipment using sophisticated measuring and test equipment.
  • Ability to read and correctly interpret complex schematics, blueprints, sketches, parts lists, layout and assembly drawings and operation, calibration and repair manuals.
  • General knowledge of electronics equipment design procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50-lbs.).


Desired skills/knowledge:
  • An AA degree in Engineering Technology or the equivalent in formal industrial or military training.
  • General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases and CAD.
  • Provide support/feedback on project delivery.
  • Perform calculations or measurements necessary to accomplish assignments.
  • Utilize databases to access and/or document information on parts, components and specifications.


Additional information:

  • Appointment type: This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid), eligible for overtime pay.
  • Salary range: This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. The expected hourly range for this position is $60.04 - $72.16, which fits into the full hourly range of $53.96 - $78.22 depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes education, certifications, and years of experience.
