Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate manufacturing engineer to join our team with a focus in Electrical Systems Integration (ESI), taking prototype work to a manufacturing level and bringing together engineering, manufacturing, and integration. The engineer will be responsible for manufacturing definition of flight critical wire harness assemblies and electromechanical interconnection systems, as well as communicating those details to the manufacturing and integration teams. This individual must be highly organized and self-driven while possessing a deep understanding of manufacturability and quality control. ResponsibilitiesAuthor and review manufacturing work instructions for electrical harness assemblies and installations
Design and implement assembly tools (formboards, jigs, fixtures, etc.) required for effective manufacturing
Assist with leading technicians during harness installations into portions of the vehicle
Problem solve, troubleshoot, and recommend opportunities to improve internal production for wire harness assembly
Investigate, research, recommend, and implement new equipment purchases to support wire harness production
Provide technical expertise and support related to manufacturing to wire harness production teams
Ensure product quality and conformance to specifications and type design
Assist with documentation for new manufacturing processes or engineering procedures for harness assembly
Recommend and implement Poka-Yoke (mistake or error proofing) methods
Serve as a subject matter expert on equipment/tools, including maintenance and coordinating routine calibration of test fixtures and test equipment
Design test fixtures for improvements using standard or automated tools
Apply basic knowledge of wire harnesses and schematics to create cable routing and layouts
Perform or coordinate with tooling vendors the maintenance or repair of equipment, including purchasing appropriate supplies and materials
Required
5+ years of experience in building wiring harnesses, creating assembly work instructions, generating technical illustrations, and supporting production/process planning
Experience developing special assembly tools to aid in manufacturing (including formboards, jigs, and fixtures)
Proficiency in at least one CAD system (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks)
Hands-on experience working with engineering drawings, BOMs, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Engineering Change (EC) systems, and Quality Management Systems (QMS)
Knowledge of industry drawing standards and specifications
Functional understanding of workmanship standards, including IPC/WHMA-A-620 (Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies) and SAE AS50881 (Wiring, Aerospace Vehicle)
Direct shop floor experience supporting or leading assembly lines
Knowledge of ergonomic tools, safety measures, and precautions used on the assembly floor
Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills with excellent attention to detail
Flexibility in dealing with a dynamic manufacturing environment and ability to interact effectively with all levels within the organization
Proficiency with CATIA V5/V6 and ENOVIA
Technical expertise working within Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems
Self-starter with the ability to work independently or as part of a collaborative cross-functional team
Hands-on product development and design experience
Experience with prototype manufacturing in a professional environment
Experience working on an FAA-certified production line
Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target hourly rate for this position is $78,700 - $130,900/yr.
