Full Job Description
Siemens Electrification and Automation is seeking a Protection, Control & Automation Panel Design Engineer with High Voltage Protection & Automation experience to design and develop sophisticated power automation and protection panels for critical substation systems. You will contribute as a hands-on design expert, integrating Siemens and third-party automation products to deliver innovative, high-impact solutions to our customers.

The Location & Lifestyle: This role is based at our national headquarters in Wendell, North Carolina-located in the heart of the Research Triangle, just 20 minutes east of Raleigh. We offer a flexible hybrid work environment, with the opportunity to work from home up to two-three days per week when business needs allow. You'll make a difference by:
  • Driving the Design: Design electrical, mechanical, and system drawings for protection, control, and automation panels per customer specifications and guidelines.
  • Engineering the Logic: Develop logic diagrams and protection schemes based on technical drawings and detailed customer requirements.
  • Ensuring Detailed Execution: Prepare Factory & Site Acceptance Test (FAT & SAT) procedures for protection systems projects.
  • Leading and Mentoring: Provide technical guidance on projects, support team members in project activities, and collaborate with a team of specialists to meet industry standards.
  • Being the Expert Voice: Serve as a primary customer interface, providing problem-solving and commissioning support.
  • Supporting the Full Lifecycle: Provide technical support from design through implementation and commissioning, while occasionally assisting the sales team with scope development, estimates, and proposals.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
  • Core Experience: Five (5) or more years of experience in power system protection, control, and automation engineering, including HV/MV utility applications, hands-on engineering execution, and technical leadership.
  • Panel Design & Documentation: Experience designing protection, control, and automation panels and developing engineering deliverables such as AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, sequence of operations, functional design specifications (FDS), and test procedures.
  • Protection Relays & Automation Systems: Applied knowledge of transmission and distribution protection relays and automation systems (Siemens, GE, SEL, ABB, or equivalent), including relay application, specification, design review, and associated engineering software.
  • Communications, Testing & Commissioning: Working knowledge of communication network technologies, hardware configuration, and protocols such as IEC 61850 (MMS/GOOSE/Sampled Values), DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, PROFINET, and PROFIBUS. Hands-on experience with commissioning, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), or Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
  • Engineering Tools: Proficiency with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, AUCOTEC Engineering Base, or similar engineering design software, as well as Microsoft Visio and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Standards & Technical Knowledge: Ability to read and interpret AC/DC schematics, one-line and three-line diagrams for medium- and high-voltage substations. Knowledge of ANSI/IEEE standards related to protection, control, and electrical panel design.
  • Travel: Willingness and ability to travel approximately 5% based on project assignments and customer requirements.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and must not require employment sponsorship now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications: (The qualifications below are preferred, but not required)
  • Utility & Generation Protection Panel Design: Experience with transmission, distribution, and generation protection applications, including feeder, transformer, generator, bus, line differential, distance, transfer-trip, and interlocking schemes, as well as panel design for substations and power generation facilities.
  • Standards & Compliance: Knowledge of UL 508A, UL 698A, ANSI, IEEE, and IEC standards related to protection, control, automation, and electrical panel design.
  • Engineering Software: Experience with AUCOTEC Engineering Base (EB/GEL), MicroStation, EPLAN, or similar engineering design platforms.
  • Programming: Experience with C programming or automation logic development.
  • Professional Licensure: Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred.

The pay range for this position is $74,970 - $128,520 annually with a target incentive of 5% of the base salary. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
