Full Job Description
Role Overview:

The Aalyria Tightbeam team focuses on delivering the world's most advanced optical communication solutions. As an electrical engineer working on the team you will develop and deliver systems for our next-generation land, sea, air & space optical communications terminals and support systems. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems as we continue to push technology forward. With your technical expertise you will manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables. You will personally design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and enhance electrical engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team on electronics integration, troubleshooting, and optimization for free-space optical (FSO) technology.
  • Assist design and development of all aspects of electronics design from individual PCBAs to higher level system integrations.
  • Use ECAD tools to design custom PCBAs including digital and mixed signal circuitry.
  • Research and select electronics components, and create and maintain CAD libraries to support PCBA design.
  • Assist in documentation of designs, test plans, and technical reports for internal teams and project stakeholders as well as customers.
  • Perform tests on the benchtop, during integration, and for experimental data collection.
  • Create wiring and cable drawings for individual assemblies as well as connection diagrams between individual PCBAs and higher level assemblies.
  • Assist as technical POC for electronics with vendors, customers, and other internal stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • Up to 3 years of electrical engineering experience in embedded systems for industrial applications.
  • Ability to design PCBAs using ECAD design software (KiCAD, Altium, etc).
  • Experience in all phases of designing circuits boards, including circuit design and component selection, schematic capture, PCB layout, and manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with Electrical Engineering lab fundamentals and electronic test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multi-meters, etc.).
  • Passion for being in the lab, problem solving, and engineering.
  • Experience with bringing up and debugging prototype PCBAs.
  • Foundational knowledge in design for manufacture and new product introduction.
  • Experience with wire/cable assembly design or wiring diagrams.
  • Understanding of designing for compliance with industry standards (FCC, UL, etc.)
  • Familiarity with board and system level power analysis.
  • Experience with specifying acceptance tests, design of experiments, data collection, and data analysis.
  • Comfortable traveling and working in a broad range of deployment environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 - 6 years of electrical engineering experience in designing electronics for industrial,
  • aerospace, or military applications.
  • Experience with KiCAD EDA software.
  • Foundational knowledge of designing and laying out circuits with high speed digital (2.5Gbps+), analog, and mixed signal circuitry.
  • Ability to hand solder and modify circuit boards, perform board level validations, and integrate into larger assemblies.
  • Experience designing, testing, and debugging products compliant with industry EMI/EMC standards (FCC, UL, etc).
  • Experience with wire and cable design for industrial, aerospace, or military applications.
  • Familiarity with version control using Git.
  • Comfortable working with Linux (Ubuntu, embedded Linux) in the terminal.
  • Experience working with embedded C.
  • Familiarity with RF and/or optical link budgets.

During the interview process you are strongly encouraged to present at least one schematic and PCB layout for designs you have personally created. This should be a schematic you have created, and a PCB you have laid out and routed. It can be a work or personal project. You should be able to explain the circuit choices and design tradeoffs made, as well as talk about the PCB layout and routing choices/tradeoffs. Presenting more than one design is not required but not discouraged.
