Job Title: EH&S Manager

Location: Burlingame

Department: Manufacturing Operations

Reports To: VP of Manufacturing

About the Role - EH&S Manager

The EH&S Manager will identify gaps and develop, continuously improve, and implement EH&S programs to effectively manage risk and ensure ongoing compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations at Peak Energy's facilities in California and Denver. If you have a wide base of EH&S systems familiarity and experience but yearn to "go back in time" and be available to kick off the safety and environmental compliance culture within an organization at the formation stages of the business than this is the position you've dreamed about. The EH&S Manager will own the initiation of a positive EH&S culture in a fast-paced, high growth company environment with world class technical leaders in the exciting battery energy storage manufacturing environment.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
  • Proficient in basic project management. Responsible for identifying initiatives, establish project plans and resource requirements, obtain stakeholder and management buy-in, and successfully drive projects to completion. Leads EH&S projects and provides project guidance to engineers, scientists, and technicians.
  • Develops, implements, and continuously improves EHS policies, standards and procedures required to maintain regulatory compliance. Works collaboratively with stakeholders to develop practical strategies to ensure successful program implementation while supporting stakeholder objectives.
  • Develops and delivers meaningful and relevant EH&S training as required by internal and external requirements.
  • Develops capabilities, systems, standards and processes to maintain compliance with EH&S regulations with input from key stakeholders.
  • Manages EHS risk by conducting audits and risk assessments, developing tactics to reduce risk to tolerable levels, and leveraging industry best practices to identify and address current and future risks.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable EHS regulatory requirements thereby always maintaining the business as "audit ready". Tracks and trends compliance gaps and works with key stakeholders to ensure compliance and prevent reoccurrence.
  • Improves the EH&S culture by working cross-functionally with colleagues and senior leaders to build a culture that embraces proactivity and integrates EHS processes into the business.
  • Identifies and leads EH&S business process improvement initiatives in support of our mission and objectives.
  • Makes decisions with minimal input and guidance. Seeks input from Peak Leadership and other experts as needed.
  • Supports emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and business continuity.
  • Conducts EH&S risk/hazard assessments for new equipment and tools prior to installation. Works with stakeholders to ensure all equipment brought into the facility meets applicable local, state, and federal requirements. Facilitates equipment Pre-Start Up Safety Reviews (PSSR) companywide.
  • Leads EH&S audit/inspection program and gap assessments. Documents findings and tracks them to closure.
  • Compiles and documents EHS metrics and other relevant technical data.
  • Contributes to the development of manufacturing, maintenance, and R&D procedures and safe work practices with regards to:
  • Process scale-up, process safety, and technology development
  • EH&S specifications of new process equipment
  • Design and start-up of new processes
  • Identifies applicable regulatory permits and programs the company must attain and/or comply with for operations. Compiles and submits compliance documents including but not limited to: Hazardous Materials Business Plan, Air Quality Permits and Annual Report, Storm Water Annual Report, and Site Emergency Response Plan.
  • Maintains contact with regulatory agencies as assigned.
  • Maintains EH&S records as required by law and company policies.
  • Contributes to or leads incident investigations and identification of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Other duties as assigned.


What You'll Bring (Qualifications):
  • Master's degree and 5 years of relevant work experience in battery, semi-conductor, chemical manufacturing or similar industry preferred OR Bachelor's Degree and 7 years of relevant work experience in battery, semi-conductor, chemical manufacturing or similar industry preferred.
  • 3+ years experience overseeing EHS compliance on new facility/equipment installation construction projects and providing design input to minimize/eliminate EHS risk associated with the finished project.
  • Demonstrated experience and initiative to start new program level compliance activities from the ground up.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certification in industrial hygiene (CIH), safety (CSP), and/or ergonomics (CIE or CPE) strongly preferred
  • Experience with ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 certification.


Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this role is $150,000-$180,000, with actual pay varying based on work location, experience, and skills. Our competitive benefits package includes:
