Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to hire a highly organized and detail-oriented Licensed Registered Nurse, Corrections Nurse I. This position will be responsible for performing direct nursing care to individuals in a correctional facility. The successful candidate shall demonstrate a valid Illinois License and good oral and written communication skills, be a self-starter, and be able to carry out nursing assignments pursuant to the direction of medical personnel in a correctional setting. Essential Functions

  • Provides direct patient care and primary nursing care services.
  • Reviews record keeping functions to check physician orders implemented.
  • Maintains security of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Monitors and maintains compliance of safety and sanitation in patient treatment and examination rooms.
  • Reviews medical records and completes health status forms on individuals in custody.
  • Participates in the Quality Assurance Programs through concurrent monitoring of staff compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • Requires completion of the Corrections Nurse Trainee program or one (1) year of nursing experience (within the last five years) in an acute care setting; preferred experience includes emergency room care, medical/surgical nursing, and/or ambulatory care.
  • Requires licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois.

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
