Distribution Automation Engineer II
$82,000 - $102,000 | In Person reporting to any of the following Minnesota locations: Duluth, Eveleth, Coleraine, or Cloquet

Support the reliability, resiliency, and operational efficiency of the power grid with Minnesota Power.

We're seeking a Distribution Automation Engineer II to help drive the modernization and reliability of our electric distribution system. In this role, you'll design, plan, implement, maintain, and optimize advanced automation technologies, including Distribution Automation (DA), SCADA, Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS), Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration (FLISR) applications, communication networks, and other control technologies that enhance grid performance, system resiliency, and customer reliability.

What you'll do:
  • Support the design, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of existing and new automation schemes, including project management and collaboration with SCADA, EMS, System Operations, Relay, and Distribution Engineering teams.
  • Assist with the deployment, integration, and configuration of software equipment supporting emerging automation and grid modernization technologies.
  • Maintain and optimize existing automation hardware, software applications, and communication systems
  • Troubleshoot, test, and maintain automation equipment and smart grid applications to ensure reliable system performance.
  • Perform fuse coordination and protection studies to verify proper equipment operation and system reliability during fault conditions.

What you'll bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering from an ABET-accredited program required.
  • Four years of related engineering experience
    OR
  • Two years of related engineering experience PLUS certification as an Engineer-in-Training.
    • A master's degree in engineering may be equivalent for up to one year of related experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be willing to travel to project sites.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match, and/or aptitude.

Preferred Experience:
  • Familiarity with Distribution Automation (DA), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems, Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS), Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration (FLISR), and fault analysis applications.
  • Experience with data analytics and reporting, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), and operational technology (OT) cybersecurity principles and practices.
  • Understanding of electric utility operations, distribution system reliability, and grid modernization initiatives.

Compensation:
  • The expected annual compensation range for this position is $82,000 - $102,000. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will vary depending on relevant knowledge, skills, training, experience, and market conditions. Additionally, this position qualifies for a comprehensive benefits package, including an Incentive Program, Retirement Benefits, Medical, Dental & Vision Plans, Health Savings Account, Flexible Spending Account, Life Insurance, Disability, Tuition Reimbursement, Voluntary Benefits, Paid Absences, and more.
