Description Summary:
This position directs, implements, administers and manages the operations and services for disability services, veterans, their dependents, and military matters related VA education benefits. Primary responsibilities include providing overall leadership, planning and supervision coordinating the federal certification process of educational benefits and ensures compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
Examples of Duties Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Program Oversight and Management
- Oversee operational and personnel functions related to Student Veterans Affairs; Supervise, train, and development of staff
- Define department vision, short and long-term plans to complement the university mission and goals
- Provide strategic direction based upon best practice and research
- Compile and submit all new academic programs for approval through the State Approving Agency and Department of Veterans Affairs in a timely manner.
- Compliance and Data Analysis
- Serve as the institution's Certifying Official
- Direct and monitor the evaluation and verification of student eligibility in accordance with the Department of Veterans Affairs and ADA guidelines
- Remain knowledgeable about proposed and enacted federal legislation that affect veterans' educational programs and ADA compliance
- Develop procedures to ensure that program records are maintained in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Veteran Outreach and Recruitment
- Identify and develop collaborations and partnerships with federal, state, and community agencies to augment the services provided by the university
- Develop and expand student veterans' activities to facilitate the transition from the military to the campus community
- Develop and implement effective recruitment and outreach strategies to increase veteran and military enrollment.
- Educational and Student Development
- Collaborate with other departments to examine questions that address the development of students
- Provide academic, career, and financial counseling to veteran and disability students
- Creates an active veterans network/support group
- Direct Supervisor
- Direct authority to make decisions on the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases; conduct employee performance evaluations
- Problem Complexity
- Problems are highly varied, complex and often non-recurring; require novel and creative approaches to resolution. New concepts and approaches may have to be developed
- Congress passes a new Bill which is signed by the President as a new Public Law. Incumbent analizes the law and guidance from the Veterans Adminstration and recommends actions the university needs to take in order to become compliant. Then coordinates with various staff and faculty units to ensure implementation; update/change Policies, Catalogs and Bulletins, etc.
Typical Qualifications Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):
- Master's Degree in higher education administration, counseling psychology, social work, or related filed required
- A minimum level of five to eight years of work-related experience is required to effectively perform the job's responsibilities
- Experience as a School Certifying Official (SCO)
- Previous experience in military affairs in a higher education setting and experience working within the U. S. military, Veteran's Affairs, or military assistance programs
