Full Job Description
Summary

The Director, Strategy & Product Portfolio is responsible for helping establish the strategic planning, product portfolio governance, and enterprise decision-making disciplines required to scale Stored Energy Systems profitably and sustainably.

Reporting to the CFO and sponsored by the CEO, this role serves as an enterprise strategic partner and cross-functional integrator-bringing rigor, clarity, and economic discipline to growth prioritization, product investment, portfolio management, and capital allocation decisions across the enterprise.

The position helps ensure executive leadership has a credible fact base, transparent trade-offs, and scalable management processes to support long-term value creation.

This is a highly influential individual contributor role designed to improve enterprise alignment, strategic focus, and decision quality without direct functional ownership or PMO-style administration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support market assessments including TAM/SAM analysis, segmentation, competitive positioning, and growth opportunity evaluation across key end markets
  • Partner with Sales, Engineering, and leadership teams to develop actionable market intelligence and strategic growth insights
  • Participate in selected customer meetings, industry events, and strategic account discussions to strengthen understanding of customer needs, buying drivers, and market dynamics
  • Improve voice-of-customer (VOC) integration into strategic planning, product portfolio decisions, and growth initiatives
  • Support evaluation of strategic partnerships, channel opportunities, and go-to-market expansion initiatives

Product Portfolio Strategy & Lifecycle Management
  • Establish and institutionalize an enterprise product portfolio framework
  • Define and embed product lifecycle stages (introduce, grow, optimize, harvest, exit)
  • Enable clear product ownership and decision accountability across product families
  • Introduce economic decision criteria (revenue, margin, complexity, capital intensity) based on outside-in perspectives (examples: total addressable markets, market segmentations, competitive landscape, etc.)
  • Support portfolio rationalization and targeted investment decisions

Capital Allocation & Resource Prioritization
  • Partner with Finance to align strategic and portfolio decisions with enterprise capital allocation priorities
  • Support prioritization and governance of major growth and transformation initiatives
  • Define success metrics, investment milestones, and exit / kill criteria for strategic investments
  • Ensure resource deployment aligns with enterprise priorities and return thresholds

Enterprise Strategic Planning
  • Support development and maintenance of the company's 3-5 year strategic plan
  • Establish and manage a repeatable annual strategic planning cadence, distinct from budgeting
  • Translate strategy into enterprise priorities and initiatives
  • Facilitate executive alignment on strategic choices, sequencing, and constraints
  • Partner with CEO, CFO and the rest of ELT as needed to prepare board- and PE-ready strategic materials

Cross-Functional Leadership & Organizational Scale
  • Act as a trusted partner to Sales, Engineering, Operations, and Finance leaders
  • Facilitate structured decision-making without adding bureaucracy
  • Introduce common frameworks and language for strategy and product discussions
  • Improve decision quality across the enterprise through clarity and focus

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience building strategy, product, or portfolio processes in scaling organizations
  • Demonstrated track record in delivering growth and winning market share
  • Prior exposure to PE-backed or board-governed environments preferred or successes with Board / Enterprise approved substantial / transformational product investments
  • Enterprise-level strategic thinking grounded in economic reality
