Job Description

The Director of Physician Compensation is responsible for the strategic oversight, design, and administration of physician compensation programs Mayo Clinic. This leadership role ensures that all Physician Compensation practices are aligned with the organization's mission, clinical priorities, and financial objectives, while maintaining compliance with applicable regulatory and legal standards. The Director will serve as a trusted advisor to leadership, providing expert guidance on compensation strategy, governance, and market competitiveness.

This position leads the development and implementation of comprehensive Physician Compensation models that support physician engagement, performance, and retention. Responsibilities include directing the annual compensation planning cycle, conducting market analyses, ensuring internal equity and fiscal stewardship across all Physician Compensation arrangements, and leveraging technology solutions to improve efficiency.

The Director will collaborate closely with stakeholders across Human Resources, Finance, Legal, Compliance, and Clinical Operations to ensure that all Physician Compensation programs are transparent, defensible, and consistent with fair market value and commercial reasonableness standards. This role also includes oversight of compensation analytics, contract review processes, and the development of policies and procedures that support operational excellence and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Finance, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience in Physician Compensation or Compensation field, preferably within a complex healthcare environment.
  • A minimum of 3+ years of experience leading teams.
  • Demonstrated expertise in physician compensation design, healthcare finance, and regulatory compliance, including Stark Law and Anti-Kickback Statute.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and present actionable insights to senior leadership.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to direct cross-functional teams and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Proven ability to lead large complex projects from design concept through implementation, including change management skills.
  • Proficiency in compensation modeling tools, data visualization platforms, and experience with Oracle or similar HRIS systems is preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a high degree of professionalism and discretion.
