Job Overview

The Director of Sales & Marketing (DOSM) is responsible for leading the overall commercial strategy for Hotel Commonwealth, a premier independent property located in Boston’s Kenmore Square, to meet and exceed revenue and market share goals. This role drives topline performance through strategic sales leadership, targeted market development, and integrated marketing initiatives across group and transient segments.  The DOSM will directly manage and grow key high-profile group accounts, including the key property partnerships and large volume accounts, leveraging deep relationships to maximize production, retention, and long-term strategic value. Additionally, the role will focus heavily on expanding and optimizing consortia and corporate transient segments, ensuring strong positioning within luxury and lifestyle travel networks, negotiated corporate accounts, and preferred partnerships.  This leader is responsible for balancing a dynamic business mix—driving group demand while accelerating transient revenue through consortia, corporate, and business travel channels. The DOSM will oversee all sales and marketing efforts, coordinating internal teams and external partners including public relations, digital marketing, social media, and third-party agencies.  Success in this role requires a highly strategic, relationship-driven leader with strong capabilities in account management, consortia engagement, corporate travel partnerships, promotional marketing, and data-driven campaigns, including Revinate and CRM-driven initiatives. The DOSM serves as a mentor and coach to the commercial team, instilling best practices in prospecting, strategic selling, and modern hospitality marketing.

Responsibilities

Commercial Leadership

  • Leads the hotel’s sales and marketing strategy to achieve or exceed revenue goals across rooms, meetings & events, and ancillary streams.
  • Drives a business mix strategy prioritizing high-rated transient, consortia, corporate, and key group accounts.
  • Delivers on productivity and activity goals as established by management.
  • Provides leadership, accountability, and performance management for the commercial team.
  • Aligns commercial strategies with the hotel’s luxury independent positioning and Boston market dynamics.

Key Account Leadership (Group)

  • Serves as the primary relationship owner for strategic accounts.
  • Develops and executes long-term account plans to maximize revenue, share, and retention.
  • Identifies incremental opportunities within these accounts, including events, group blocks, and ancillary revenue.
  • Ensures exceptional execution and partnership alignment to strengthen loyalty and repeat business.

Direct Sales & Market Development

  • Leads proactive sales initiatives including prospecting, sales calls, and networking within the Boston market.
  • Actively targets and acquires new group and transient business across key demand segments.
  • Maintains a strategic target account list focused on high-value opportunities.
  • Leverage local market relationships, industry organizations, and community engagement to generate demand.

Transient Market Strategy (Primary Focus)

  • Drives transient revenue growth with a strong emphasis on:
    • Consortia (e.g., luxury cardholder program, Internova, etc.)
    • Corporate negotiated accounts
    • Business travel and preferred partnerships
  • Develops and executes consortia engagement strategies including rate programs, advisor relationships, and promotional campaigns.
  • Expands the hotel’s presence within luxury travel networks and preferred partner ecosystems.
  • Collaborates with revenue management to optimize pricing, availability, and channel strategy.
  • Establishes clear performance goals tied to transient penetration, ADR growth, and market share.

 

Marketing Strategy & Campaign Execution

  • Leads the development and execution of integrated marketing strategies aligned with revenue goals.
  • Oversee:
    • Digital marketing and website performance
    • Email marketing and database activation (Revinate preferred)
    • Social media and brand storytelling
    • Promotional campaigns and partnerships
  • Develop targeted campaigns to support consortia, corporate, and key group segments.
  • Executes experiential marketing and on-property activations aligned with the hotel’s brand and Boston culture.

 

Third-Party Partner Leadership

  • Manage relationships with external partners, including:
    • Public relations agencies
    • Digital marketing firms
    • Social media partners
    • Creative and branding vendors
  • Ensures all partners are aligned with hotel objectives, brand standards, and performance expectations.

 

Revenue Optimization & Yield Strategy

  • Partners with revenue management to drive profitability through strategic pricing and inventory control.
  • Negotiates group and corporate agreements aligned with overall yield strategy.
  • Evaluates opportunities to ensure optimal mix of business and contribution to total revenue.

Account Management & Client Relations

  • Build and maintain strong relationships across all key accounts and segments.
  • Utilizes CRM tools to track account performance, activity, and opportunities.

  • Leads, coaches, and develops the on-property commercial team.

Qualifications

 

Education / Formal Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Experience

  • 5+ years of hotel sales leadership experience
