The Role

The Head Director and Head, Cloud Modernization and Migrations is a senior technology leadership role responsible for driving large-scale cloud transformation across Scotiabank. Reporting to the Senior Vice President & Global Head, Global Banking & Markets Engineering, this role leads the enterprise-wide execution and coordination of cloud modernization and migration initiatives across all CIO technology towers. The mandate includes partnering directly with CIOs and their leadership teams to accelerate the adoption of public and hybrid cloud platforms, modernize legacy application estates, and enable scalable, resilient, and secure technology capabilities aligned with business growth and regulatory expectations. Operating within a highly regulated global financial institution, the role balances speed of delivery with strong risk management, control, and governance, while delivering measurable outcomes across cost efficiency, resiliency, developer productivity, and time to market. This is a high-impact leadership position with responsibility for shaping cloud migration strategy, setting engineering standards, and building a high-performing team that executes complex transformations at scale.

  • Define and execute the enterprise cloud modernization and migration strategy in partnership with all Business Line CIOs, technology executives, and business stakeholders.
  • Lead and coordinate large-scale application and platform migrations to public and hybrid cloud environments across multiple technology towers.
  • Build, lead, and develop a team of approximately 100 technology professionals, including a mix of full-time employees and strategic contractors.
  • Establish clear governance, tooling, standards, and repeatable migration patterns to enable consistent, high-quality delivery across portfolios.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to CIOs, working directly with their organizations to plan, prioritize, and execute migration roadmaps.
  • Oversee vendor and partner relationships, including cloud service providers and systems integrators, ensuring value delivery, financial discipline, and contractual compliance.
  • Ensure cloud migrations meet security, resiliency, regulatory, and risk management requirements appropriate for a global financial institution.
  • Track and report progress, benefits realization, and key risks to senior technology leadership, adjusting strategy as required.
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering practices, automation, and developer experience to accelerate modernization outcomes.
  • Foster a strong culture of accountability, collaboration, and engineering excellence across the cloud migration organization.

  • Proven leadership experience managing large, diverse teams, including senior leaders and mixed FTE/contractor models.
  • Experience operating within regulated industries, with a strong appreciation for risk, control, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience within financial services or other highly regulated environments
  • Advanced degree or relevant cloud certifications.
  • Demonstrated success influencing and partnering with executive stakeholders across large, matrixed organizations.
