General Summary

Provides strategic and operational leadership for the engineering, utilities, and sustainability functions across the hospital system's facilities portfolio. This role is responsible for ensuring safe, reliable, compliant, and resilient building systems while advancing energy management, decarbonization, and environmental stewardship initiatives aligned with the organization's clinical mission, financial goals, and regulatory obligations.

Essential Functions:
  • Provides enterprise leadership for engineering operations including but not limited to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, medical gas, life safety, fire protection, building automation systems, Central Utility Plants (CUPs), emergency power and critical infrastructure redundancy.
  • Establishes and maintains engineering standards, specifications, and best practices across the system; Reviews and approves designs for infrastructure and design and construction projects.
  • Oversees system commissioning program and collaborates with project teams; Supports facility infrastructure planning for renovations, expansions, and new construction projects.
  • Develops and executes the hospital system's sustainability and decarbonization strategy; Manages sustainability team and recommends sustainability priorities; Leads energy management initiatives, including benchmarking, audits, retro commissioning, and capital improvements; Drives reductions in energy use intensity (EUI), water consumption, waste, and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Collaborates with clinical and operational leaders to integrate sustainability into care delivery without compromising safety or performance.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulations; Supports emergency preparedness, resilience planning, and climate adaptation strategies
  • Develops and manages operating and capital budget for sustainability programs; Provides lifecycle cost analysis and ROI evaluations for energy and infrastructure investments; Partners with Facilities Services team to evaluate projects for capital planning.
  • Identifies and manages incentive, rebate, and grant opportunities related to energy and sustainability initiatives; Completes implementation and manages utility bill pay system in partnership with partners.
  • Builds strong partnerships within organization teams including but not limited to: Finance, IT, Supply Chain and Facilities Services Teams - Design and Construction, Facilities Engineering, Real Estate, and Property Management,
  • Manages direct consultant relationships, service providers, and commissioning programs.

Minimum Education:
  • Bachelors Degree Degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or Sustainability. Required
  • Masters Degree Degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or Sustainability. Preferred

Work Experience:
  • 15+ years Experience in energy engineering, sustainability or related field. Required
  • 5 years Experience working in a multi hospital systems or large higher education campus. Preferred
  • 5 years Experience working with enterprise CMMS, BAS analytics, and energy management platforms. Preferred

Driver's License Statement:

Must possess a valid driver's license in the current state of residence. Driving record must meet requirements established by WellSpan Risk Management.

Courses and Training:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) Upon Hire Preferred
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Upon Hire Preferred
  • LEED AP, WELL AP, or similar Upon Hire Preferred
