Director, Business Development - Emerging MarketsPosition SummaryResponsible for developing and executing business development strategies that drive growth within the California Division's emerging market sectors, including, but not limited to, Aviation, Healthcare, Hospitality, and Theme & Entertainment. This role will partner closely with Operations Leads, and other business development leaders across complementary verticals and market segments, to ensure a coordinated approach to client development, opportunity identification, market intelligence, and pursuit strategy across all California markets.
This position serves as a key member of the California Division business development leadership team and is expected to collaborate across sectors, geographies, and client relationships to support overall division growth and strategic objectives.
Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop and Execute Emerging Market Growth Strategy- Lead business development activities for Aviation, Healthcare, Hospitality, and Theme & Entertainment market sectors.
- Develop and maintain strategic plans for market expansion, client engagement, and opportunity capture within assigned sectors.
- Identify emerging trends, market shifts, funding opportunities, and new client relationships that align with the California Division's long-term strategic plan.
- Partner with Operations, Preconstruction, Marketing, and Executive Leadership to convert market opportunities into successful project pursuits.
Build and Strengthen Client Relationships- Develop and maintain relationships with owners, consultants, industry partners, architects, engineers, contractors, trade associations, and key market influencers.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to clients and industry partners throughout the project lifecycle.
- Identify opportunities to deepen relationships with existing clients while expanding the division's presence with new clients and markets.
Collaborate Across the BD Leadership Team- Work closely with other business development leaders to ensure a coordinated and unified business development strategy across the California Division.
- Support pursuits and client-development efforts outside assigned sectors when relationships, expertise, or strategic opportunities warrant involvement.
- Provide coverage and continuity for fellow Business Development leaders during vacations, leave, or periods of increased workload.
- Share client intelligence, market insights, and relationship strategies that benefit the division as a whole.
- Champion a "One Balfour Beatty" approach to growth and client engagement.
Pursuit Leadership- Support pursuit strategy development, including positioning, teaming strategies, identification of differentiators, and interview preparation.
- Participate in pursuit planning and proposal reviews for major California opportunities.
- Assist in development and implementation of capture plans for priority pursuits across all market sectors.
Market Intelligence & Strategic Planning- Monitor competitive activity, political environments, funding sources, procurement trends, and market dynamics.
- Contribute to annual strategic planning processes and division growth initiatives.
- Provide regular reporting on pipeline health, market opportunities, relationship development, and strategic initiatives.
Culture, Leadership and Collaboration- Promote Balfour Beatty's values and culture.
- Serve as a collaborative leader who builds relationships across sectors, functions, and regions.
- Foster a growth mindset and support the development of future business development and operational leaders.
- Demonstrate a willingness to contribute beyond assigned market sectors in support of divisional objectives.
Preferred Experience- Bachelor's Degree in Business or related field, preferred.
- 8+ years of experience in business development. Experience in the construction industry, preferred.
- Demonstrated success developing client relationships and winning work within one or more of the following sectors:
- Aviation
- Healthcare
- Hospitality
- Theme & Entertainment
- Higher Education
- Civic/Public Infrastructure
- Federal/Justice
- Strong understanding of alternative delivery methods, public procurement processes, and design-build/lease-leaseback delivery models.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with operational leaders and executive management.
- Experience working across multiple market sectors and building strategic partnerships.
The base compensation range for the role of Director Business Development posted above is $210,000 to $221,000,00 annually.
