The Product Realization and Reliability Office (PRRO) in Nuclear Production Operations consists of a multidisciplinary group of engineers and scientists that support plutonium programs (i.e., pit production, surveillance, research & development, and subcritical experiments) across the entire Nuclear Production Operations organization.

The PRRO Office is seeking a digital engineering generalist to support standardization of process and data usage in support of factory floor improvements. The objective of this role is to standardize information collection practices, engineer solutions for leveraging the data to drive factory floor change, and link the information with other systems (PLM/MRP/MES/RMS etc.). This position will have a mix of direct shop floor engagement and office work. The generalist position will provide as-needed support to different digital engineering initiatives and achieve a broad understanding of the digital engineering domain.

The selected candidate will be responsible for-

  • Leading the development of complex continuous improvement opportunities that leverage digital engineering capabilities
  • Writing policies and procedures for managing specific information objects
  • Supporting or acting as a capability lead in developing specific digital engineering capabilities from concept through to production implementation
  • Supporting Nuclear Production workforce in using digital engineering capabilities (PLM, RMS, MBSE, etc.)
  • Championing Nuclear Production digital engineering vision within LANL and the overall NSE
  • Participation in industry standards working groups that can directly support the production mission
  • Facilitating requirements gathering and user feedback collection from Nuclear Production workforce
  • Identifying collaboration opportunities with other portions of LANL

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

R&D Engineer 2:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of change and configuration management
  • Experience planning and executing projects of low to moderate complexity
  • Experience creating and using engineering models in at least two domains (mCAD, eCAD, MBSE, FEA, Requirements etc.)
  • Strong documentation skills; demonstrated ability to document technical results in a formal method/format
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong presentation skills


Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:

  • Experience working with a formal change management process
  • Experience planning and executing projects of moderate to high complexity
  • Demonstrable history of successful project and task execution in teams of at least 4 people
  • Demonstrable history of teaming across organizational boundaries on complex project


Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 3: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Q Clearance: This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by, or on behalf of, the Federal Government for access to classified matter.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
