Hiring salary range: $4,102.00 - $5,860.00 / Bi-weekly

Reporting to the Manager, this role is responsible for providing specialized civil engineering expertise in the planning, design, and execution of major and complex transmission and distribution station projects. The incumbent will lead the development and review of civil designs, technical specifications, and standards, ensuring alignment with engineering requirements, regulatory codes, and design intent. The role requires collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across all project phases, as well as the review of contracts, equipment tenders, and technical deliverables. This position also provides technical guidance, supports construction and field-related activities, and contributes to continuous improvement of engineering practices while ensuring the delivery of safe, reliable, and high-quality design solutions.

Job Function:

For major and/or complex transformer, switching, frequency changer and condenser stations projects, and the switchyard features associated with generating stations, develop "civil" designs to achieve the concepts, layouts and requirements as specified for the project. Collaborate with all concerned in the various phases leading to final design, ensure coordination of various features to avoid design conflict, supervise assisting staff as required on major work assignments. Examine contracts and equipment tenders to ensure same meet with the intent of the "civil" design.

Job Description:

  • Develop civil designs for major and/or complex transformer, switching, frequency changer and condenser stations projects, and the switchyard features of generating stations, to achieve the concepts, layouts, and requirements as specified for the project, Collaborating with all concerned in the various phases leading to final design, preparing sketches, instructions, and other data as required for drawing production, and providing advice and guidance as required throughout.
  • Examine concepts, equipment and material tenders, to verify that design, equipment, or agreement, meets the intent and requirements of the "civil" design, collaborating with all concerned in changes necessary.
  • Attend to "structural design" problems as arising during field construction, visiting construction locations to investigate and aid in the resolving of problems and attend to design revisions as required.
  • Recommend the need for new or revised "structural" design standards and assist in their development.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance as a structural design "specialist", to various internal and external parties on designs pertinent to transformer, switching, frequency changer, and condenser stations, and the switchyard features of generating stations.
  • Periodically supervise staff assigned to assist on major or complex projects, attending to the assigning of work or areas of responsibility, providing advice and guidance where required, and ensuring accuracy and quality of output and performance. Assist with the development of engineering staff as required.
  • Lead and participate in peer reviews of engineering deliverables to ensure technical accuracy, constructability, and alignment with applicable codes, standards, and design requirements.
  • Serve on technical and material committees as a representative of the stations design organization.
  • This job requires incumbents to possess their Professional Engineering Ontario (PEO) License (P.ENG License) and seal to approve engineering work done by themselves or others.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Education:

  • Requires an engineering knowledge of the behaviour and design of steel structures, soil mechanics and foundations, concretes, structural theory, mechanics of materials, and the appropriate engineering mathematics.
  • This job requires incumbents to possess their Professional Engineering Ontario (PEO) License (P.ENG License) and seal to approve engineering work done by themselves or others.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of 4 years of University training (Grade XII plus 5 years) in an appropriate field such as Civil Engineering.


Experience:

  • Requires practical experience in the structural design areas to fully gain familiarity with the practical approaches, methods, and techniques pertinent to structural design for stations projects, and appreciation of the application and characteristics of various types of electrical equipment, and the requirements for drawing production, standards, and practices.
  • Requires experience related to field work to fully appreciate the construction and installation practicalities versus design.
  • Requires experience in site grading, oil spill containment, storm water management, and road design.
  • A period of up to ten years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
