Job Description

The minimum base salary for this position is $100,000 - $125,000, plus annual bonus. Salary may vary based on education, knowledge, and experience.

Location within the Southwest or Western United States is flexible, although a location in Boulder City, NV is preferred.

Job Summary:
  • Deputy Senior Managers are responsible for supporting a Senior Manager in the technical, administrative, operational, and personnel management responsibilities associated with assigned teams, projects, clients, and service areas.
  • Deputy Senior Managers are responsible for managing, leading, and evaluating a team of employees consisting of Team Leaders, Associate Team Leaders, Project Managers, and other staff, as well as collaborating with the staff on the direct Senior Manager's team.
  • Deputy Senior Managers are responsible for managing staff that are fulfilling WEST's collective workload consisting of contracts for services while collaborating with Practice Group Leaders, Client Liaisons, and Quality Manager to provide highest quality deliverables.
  • Deputy Senior Managers report directly to a Senior Manager and work collaboratively with their direct Senior Manager, Practice Group Leaders, Client Liaisons, Quality Manager, and Business Development Manager to fulfill essential job functions.

  • Assisting the CEO, Executive Team, Service Directors, and Senior Managers in communicating WEST's mission, core principle, procedures and processes to all employees; promoting the overall WEST culture, including a commitment to honesty, integrity, and professionalism.
  • Helping team members understand WEST administrative needs (following policy, timesheets, expenses, HR forms, leave, accounting, policies and procedures, health and safety, etc.).
  • Fostering a strong intra- and interoffice team approach within WEST; developing strong teams both internal to the Deputy Senior Managers team and cross-functionally across the Career Pathway branches.
  • Fostering a consensus-building managerial approach, while facilitating consistency in when, how and by whom decisions are to be made.


Business Development and Marketing
  • Working with the Business Development Manager, Practice Groups and Client Liaisons when appropriate, and other WEST personnel as appropriate to develop proposals and respond to RFPs appropriate for WEST.
  • Maintaining productive and mutually beneficial working relationships with clients and partners.


Project Management
  • Continuing to contribute to work products and services through assistance with or management of active WEST projects.
  • Working with the direct Senior Manager in managing their team's workload, services and products to meet contractual needs of the company.
  • Working with Senior Managers, Practice Groups, and Client Liaisons when appropriate, other Deputy Senior Managers and Team Leaders to help balance staff workloads on their team.
  • Working with Project Groups, Client Liaisons, and Quality Manager to ensure on time and high-quality work products.


Personnel Management
  • Promoting a positive work environment where team members, employees, clients, and partners are treated with respect
  • Determining, providing, and maintaining the infrastructure and working environment necessary for work to be carried out in a safe manner
  • Evaluating team member performance; overseeing the quality of employee performance and addressing underperforming employees within their respective teams;
  • Setting the expectation that team members are accountable for both providing high quality services and high-quality work products while collaborating with WEST's technical experts, Client Liaisons, and quality team.
  • Providing guidance together with Practice Groups and Client Liaison to team members, typically comprised of Team Leaders and project managers; training, mentoring, and coaching team members to ensure growth opportunities and maximize staff talent and potential
  • Ensuring that individuals are confident and competent to perform their assigned work, receive the appropriate education and training, and have acquired the suitable skills, knowledge and experience to perform their work responsibilities
  • Encouraging staff together with Practice Groups and Client Liaison to pursue growth opportunities and work that they find professionally satisfying while pursuing WEST's strategic goals and objectives; helping to develop and maintain comradery, present learning opportunities, and instill loyalty to WEST while maintaining the company culture
  • In coordination with the Senior Manager, recruiting and retaining employees; facilitating the hiring, disciplinary action, and firing processes

Job Requirements

Requirements:
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental policy or planning, environmental engineering, natural resources, biological studies, wildlife management, wildlife biology, statistics, construction management, business or finance, or related field.
  • Must have four (4) years of experience in environmental consulting with WEST; or eight (8) plus years of experience in environmental consulting overall.
  • Previous people/personnel management experience is required.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills, including the ability to develop talent, coach, mentor and motivate staff; ability to effectively supervise and motivate others
  • Ability to develop cohesive, effective and highly productive teams
  • Proven collaboration skills with peers, upper management, and others
  • Strategic development and thinking, and developing insights into the external market forces, competitors and customers
  • General understanding of finance, financial goals and budgeting, including understanding how the firm makes money and the importance of balancing billable and non-billable staff time
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to train and educate the company on the team's initiatives and how the work integrates with other projects and company objectives
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to conduct interviews and properly evaluate candidates
  • Ability to effectively delegate workloads
  • Ability to follow instructions from managers and accept guidance and constructive criticism


After an offer of employment is made, the candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and a DMV records check that meets WEST's minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. A valid driver's license will be required.
