This role will collaborate with the finance, actuarial and audit teams to support data analysis, enabling the business to make data-driven decisions. Additionally, the position requires deep technical expertise and leadership to drive complex data integration and optimization initiatives. This role will involve leading the migration from an on-premises MapR Hadoop to AWS big data technologies.
As a Data Architect Intermediate, you will:
• Design and maintain scalable data models using AWS services and Medallion Architecture.
• Design and implement Star or Snowflake schemas based on business requirements, data complexity, performance, and reporting needs.
• Develop and optimize fact tables, dimension tables, and analytics-ready reporting datasets to support dashboards and enterprise self-service analytics.
• Apply dimensional modeling best practices, including SCD Types 1,2, and 3, to support historical tracking and data governance.
• Leverage S3, Glue, Athena, and Redshift to architect reliable, scalable, and high-performance data solutions.
• Collaborate with data engineering, analytics, and business stakeholders to advise on end-to-end solutions from strategy to architecture.
• Create and communicate enterprise data architecture standards, best practices, and data movement/mapping designs.
• Establish and participate in data management processes including data lineage, profiling, data quality management, stewardship and governance.
Position Requirements:
• Several years' experience in data architecture or data engineering.
• Understanding of traditional and modern data ingestion, data storage, data processing and data access processes
• Strong SQL and analytical skills, with experience managing large, complex datasets using tools such as Python, Spark, and SQL.
• Experience with cloud data management technologies, such as AWS, Azure, Databricks, or Snowflake.
• Knowledge of data governance, lineage, cataloging, and compliance frameworks
• Build architecture diagrams, reference architectures, and implementation roadmaps
• Experience with Agile/Scrum development methodologies
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• You are known for being a team player, and your excellent analytical and critical thinking skills are complemented by strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
Preferred Additional Skills:
• Experience evaluating how partitioning strategies, file sizing, and columnar formats like Parquet impact query performance and compute costs.
• Experience in data catalog architecture, with a deep understanding of how schema evolution impacts downstream systems.
• Experience understanding how specific design choices (grain, join patterns, and partition cardinality) translate into real-world compute costs and job reliability.
• Experience with reporting solutions like Tableau, Microsoft Power BI or similar visualization tools.
Work arrangements defined:
• Hybrid 8 - you will work a minimum of 8 days in a 4-week period at your primary office headquarters (typically 2 days per week). The remaining days will be remote within British Columbia.
