Want to help reduce traffic crashes across Texas? Reporting directly to the Crash Data & Analysis (CDA) Section Director in the Traffic Safety Division, this Advanced Crash Data Analyst position will rely on your data and process analysis skills, from data visualization and single element analysis up to process overview development. Help shape the future of crash data collection, analysis, and utilization across the TxDOT enterprise, and provide insightful and actionable recommendations to improve safety across the state. This position is located at our new headquarters in Southeast Austin.

Position Description

Data Analyst IV (B24)

Performs complex data analysis and data research work. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Employees at this level may provide guidance to other data analysts and may identify data gaps, errors, anomalies, inconsistencies, and redundancies by analyzing the content, structure, and relationships within data.

Data Analyst V (B26)

Performs highly complex data analysis and data research work. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Employees at this level may:
• Guide the selection of data management tools and the development of standards, usage guidelines, and procedures for those tools.
• Define, develop, and implement data and reporting standards.
• Develop data quality measures, analyze data quality results, and implement necessary changes to ensure data quality improvement.
• Develop software applications or programming to use for statistical modeling, data analysis, and graphic analysis.

Essential Duties:

Data Analyst IV
• Analyzes large-scale datasets using the Crash Records Information System (CRIS) and Enterprise Data Warehouse to identify traffic safety trends.
• Categorizes and evaluates crash data by specific identifiers (e.g., active school zones, pedestrian/passenger involvement, injury severity) to support district safety plans.
• Utilizes advanced data analytics platforms (such as Numetric and Tableau) to design, develop, and maintain interactive dashboards for executive leadership and safety engineers.
• Cleans, validates, and prunes complex datasets to ensure data integrity and compliance with state/federal reporting guidelines (including NHTSA standards).
• Translates complex statistical findings into technical reports, proprietary justifications, and executive summaries for non-technical stakeholders.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Data Analyst V

All of the essential duties for Data Analyst IV in addition to:
• Leading the development of division-wide data quality metrics, establishes reporting standards, and mentors' junior analysts in advanced querying procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

Data Analyst IV-3 years of experience in data analysis, research, compilation, and/or report writing and design work experience.

Data Analyst V-4 years of experience in data analysis, research, compilation, and/or report writing and design work experience

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Data Analyst IV and V
• Knowledge of statistics and analyzing data sets; running queries, report writing, and presenting findings; and record keeping, including security procedures for handling, protecting, and distributing confidential data.
• Skill in the use of a computer and applicable software, in conducting data searches, in evaluating and translating large amounts of data, and in critical thinking.
• Ability to compile, review, and analyze data; to prepare reports; to maintain accuracy and attention to detail; and to communicate effectively.
• Knowledge of data models, database design development, data mining, and segmentation techniques.
• Skill in analyzing problems and devising effective solutions.

Additional competencies for Data Analyst V:
• Ability to oversee or lead the work of others.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
• Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, or pull objects.
• Requires close visual acuity to perform activities such as analyzing datasets, writing/reviewing code, and viewing multiple computer monitors.
• Involves sitting for prolonged periods of time while operating a computer and analyzing data.
