Full Job Description
The Data and AI Services (DAS) Group at NERSC provides AI, analytics, and data management support to more than 11,000 users, addressing challenges at the intersection of AI, simulations, and experimental data. The DAS Group Leader will lead, mentor, and guide the team while helping develop and execute NERSC, Computing Sciences Area, and Department of Energy strategic initiatives in AI and advanced computing. The group advises users on AI, data analysis, and complex workflows; provides training in AI/ML and data management; supports software and large-scale data challenges; and collaborates across Berkeley Lab research initiatives.

You will:
  • Develop the DAS group's vision and strategy and contribute to NERSC leadership.
  • Lead recruitment, mentoring, professional development, feedback, and performance management.
  • Design and implement scalable AI, analytics, data management, and workflow services across NERSC systems.
  • Develop innovative solutions for emerging user communities, particularly DOE user facilities with AI, data, and complex workflow needs.
  • Collaborate across NERSC and Berkeley Lab to enable large-scale simulation, data analysis, and AI applications.
  • Engage users to understand and prioritize evolving data and AI requirements.
  • Develop and advocate for data management and curation policies aligned with FAIR data principles.
  • Represent NERSC in HPC and AI communities through conferences, workshops, and peer collaborations.
  • Partner with other DOE laboratories on emerging AI technologies and related initiatives.


We are looking for:
  • Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 8 years and a Master's degree; or equivalent experience, PLUS a minimum of 3 or more years of experience in a managerial (or lead) role of a software development organization or networking unit.
  • Broad computational background including experience with latest AI and data analytics tools.
  • Prior experience with scientific applications, workflows and computational systems.
  • Ability to mentor staff to increase their knowledge and skills.
  • Knowledge of a variety of HPC technologies.
  • Understand balancing technical solutions with user needs and show initiative, tact and good judgment in developing solutions to problems.
  • Ability to work effectively with stakeholders, gather requirements from the scientific user community and turn requirements into solutions for users.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in large projects, and contribute to an active intellectual environment.
  • Ability to assume lead role in activities, ability to grasp complex problems and develop novel solutions.
  • Ability to innovate new operational, service and support mechanisms.
  • Ability to provide supervision, guidance and mentoring for the professionals and technical support staff in the group.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.


Desired skills/knowledge:
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in a scientific, mathematics or computational discipline.
  • Proven track record leading teams with expertise spanning many subject areas.
  • Experience providing end-user support or working with teams that provide end user support.
  • Experience with the software lifecycle from design and development through maintenance.
  • Prior experience with HPC applications, workflows and computational and storage systems.

  • Appointment type: This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • Salary range:The expected salary for this position is $203,496 - $248,736, which fits into the full salary of $180,876 - $306,268 depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • Background check: This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position.   • Work modality: This position requires substantial on-site presence, but is eligible for a flexible work mode, and hybrid schedules may be considered. Hybrid work is a combination of performing work on-site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA and some telework. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. In rare cases, full-time telework or remote work modes may be considered.
