Cryogenic Systems Engineering Manager to lead and advance the cryogenic operations and engineering capabilities that support the successful fielding of all NIF targets. You will provide broad technical leadership, strategic direction, and high-level engineering oversight across cryogenic test systems, target layering operations, and readiness activities for shot campaigns at the National Ignition Facility, which is a round-the-clock operational facility conducting laser fusion experiments. This position resides in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate and directly supports the NIF & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate.
This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.
You will - Lead teams, programs, or functions with a technical focus, operate under consultative direction, use subject matter expertise and significant team leadership experience, and exercise judgment within established policies to monitor workflow, allocate resources, ensure timely completion of projects, independently determine strategies, and achieve objectives while managing organizational impact and pursuing actions to achieve long-term goals.
- Provide strategic direction and technical leadership for the Cryo Operations and Cryo Engineering teams, aligning resources and execution with program objectives and ensure prioritization and delivery of cryogenic system initiatives.
- Lead the design, integration, and optimization of cryogenic test systems to improve performance, reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Drive the development of innovative cryogenic methods and technologies through rigorous analysis of system performance, processes, and data.
- Lead integrated project teams in deploying advanced target fielding capabilities, defining operational boundaries, and advising leadership on system capabilities and risk.
- Oversee the maintenance, readiness, and continuous improvement of cryogenic and target positioning systems to support safe and reliable operations.
- Provide expert technical judgment and decision-making during off-normal events, enabling teams to respond effectively and mitigate risk.
- Develop and implement training frameworks that build workforce capability, standardize practices, and strengthen operational readiness.
- Establish requirements and verification plans, and author, review, and approve technical documentation.
- Mentor engineering and operations staff, fostering technical growth, accountability, and leadership capacity.
- Collaborate across organizations and disciplines to align stakeholders, solve complex problems, and advance shared objectives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in Materials, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Extensive knowledge and experience with cryogenic systems and experience leading cryogenic operations and engineering teams in complex, high-consequence technical environments.
- Extensive experience making sound technical judgements and extensive decision-making skills, especially during off-normal events or rapidly evolving operational conditions.
- Demonstrated ability to develop innovative methods and technologies.
- Extensive team leadership and management experience.
- Extensive experience developing and implementing innovative processes, technologies, and process improvements based on data analysis and operational needs.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to lead a team, communicate effectively and collaborate with technical support personnel on requirements, design, safety, construction, or modification of process, and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
Qualifications We Desire- Experience planning and directing complex technical programs.
- Experience in NIF or Target Area Experimental Systems (TExS) cryogenic or target-fielding environments.
- MS degree in related field, like chemical or gas systems engineering.
Pay Range$227,430 - $288,396 Annually
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
