What We Are Looking For

The Corrosion Technician position is based out of Kinder Morgan's Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America (NGPL) Joliet, IL warehouse located at 2300 South I-80 Frontage Road, Joliet, IL 60436. This role is part of the United Steelworkers union. This is a Monday through Friday position with some on-call responsibilities nights and weekends. Position Description:

Responsible for corrosion control and pipeline integrity across the Chicagoland Metropolitan Area, Illinois. Reporting stations include NGPL Station 113 (Shorewood, IL), Station 328 (Joliet, IL).

What You Will Do

Primary Purpose:

Provide a high level of technical support on a regional or system basis relating to corrosion control and pipeline integrity. Design and maintain cathodic protection and internal corrosion control facilities. Conduct internal and external specialized corrosion tests on steel structure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The proper design, installation, operation, and maintenance of cathodic protection equipment and other corrosion control facilities on high-pressure natural gas pipeline systems.
  • The preparation of written documents including action plans, closure reports, technical papers, site-specific plans, bid packages, annual corrosion reviews, emails, budgets, etc.
  • Recognize corrosion related concerns and perform corrosion control tests, inspections, measurements, surveys, and evaluate data collected to ensure effective operation of corrosion control facilities.
  • Installation or supervising the installation of corrosion control facilities, maintaining these facilities and producing adequate records/documentation by use of field sketches, as-built prints, computer software, and field note sheets.
  • Gather and analyze the corrosion control data as required by regulations, industry standards, and company procedures.
  • Compile corrosion control data collected into the American Innovations Pipeline Compliance System software program.
  • Lead efforts to design and implement effective long-term cathodic protection systems.
  • Assist with the development of cost estimates, drawings, job specifications and contract bid documents for the completion of capital improvement projects.
  • Assist with the evaluation, development, implementation and maintenance of facility grounding systems.
  • Assist with the implementation and validation of the company pipeline integrity program.
  • Perform coating evaluations for atmospheric corrosion control and prepare mitigation plans.
  • Participate in regulatory and company inspections/audits.
  • Assist local management with corrosion control status and data review.
  • Inspect third party construction/work activities.
  • Required to assist other employees as requested.
  • Company will provide PPE work attire and job related tools and equipment.
  • Company will provide paid on-the-job training.
  • Entry level candidate is eligible to receive 120 hours of prorated paid time off (PTO).
  • Position is eligible for approved overtime pay and paid call-outs. Paid call-out rate is 1.5 times the hourly rate for a minimum of 2 hours if site work is required.
  • Position is eligible for a 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off.

Educational Requirements:
  • Associate's Degree in Applied Science or a two-year technical degree preferred; however, candidates with equivalent skills and work experience will be considered.

Position Requirements:
  • Must be able to withstand extreme weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work safely and effectively manage corrosion control/pipeline integrity activities in districts that include both rural and densely populated areas.
  • Required to respond to after hour call outs due to equipment and/or operational problems and may be required to carry a communication device.
  • Must be able to work independently as needed.
  • Must be willing to work overtime on an as-needed basis.
  • Acceptable history of safe work practices.
  • Ability to actively support the region's safety program.
  • Acceptable job performance.
  • Ability to effectively organize, plan, prioritize, document, and complete work with minimal supervision in an acceptable period.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, take direction from Supervisors, keep required job schedules, focus on details, and follow work rules.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong computer skills (MS operating system, MS Word, MS Excel, etc.).
  • Ability to troubleshoot electronic and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to gather and analyze cathodic protection data.
  • Ability to use electronic test equipment.
  • Required to maintain technical proficiency.
  • Ability to perform basic mechanical work associated with natural gas facilities.
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain a valid driver's license, meet company insurability requirements and safely operate motor vehicles
  • Travel may be required and anticipated inside and outside of the assigned area.
  • Candidates with experience in a related field or discipline who do not possess the above requirements will be considered. The successful candidate will be provided on-the-job training and must pass progressive testing over a 48 month period from a level 1 technician to a level 4 technician. Candidates with higher levels of skill and experience may be brought on at a level 2 or higher.

Preferred Experience, Skills and Knowledge: (above the minimum requirements; not required, but advantageous in this position):
  • NACE CP-2 and Internal Corrosion Technologist certification.
  • Experience in all phases of corrosion control and pipeline integrity as described in the Job Description.
  • Experience with computer software: American Innovations PCS/CPDM, KAPA, MS Office, etc.
  • Working knowledge of AC and DC electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of Kinder Morgan company policies and practices.
  • Knowledge of 49 CFR Part 192 regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of NACE standards.
  • Knowledge and experience with safe gas handling practices.
  • Knowledge of National Electrical Code philosophies and installation requirements.
  • Experience in external corrosion control and monitoring practices.
  • Experience with in-line inspections, close interval surveys, and interference testing.
  • Experience in cathodic protection design.
  • Experience with coating systems and specifications.
  • Experience with NDT techniques/inspections.
  • Knowledge of SCC identification/characterization.

Compensation:

Pay range: $40.26 - $51.88 per hour. Job level (Technician C - District Technician) and pay commensurate with experience and skill set.
