DescriptionCorrectional Unit Supervisor (CUS) Clallam Bay Corrections Center (CBCC)Full Time | PermanentThe Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Correctional Unit Supervisor at Clallam Bay Corrections Center.
Clallam Bay Corrections Center is a 900-bed male facility located on the point of the Olympic Peninsula. It is 50 miles west of Port Angeles and looks out over the Strait of Juan de Fuca at Vancouver Island. This facility houses medium and close custody incarcerated individuals. CBCC also operates a Restricted Housing Unit.
Whether the work is inside a prison, in community corrections, or in an administrative office, the Washington State Department of Corrections professional staff experience a high degree of personal satisfaction knowing they are creating environments in which all incarcerated individuals can learn to make choices that contribute to a safer society.
Duties This position is responsible for supervising Incarcerated Individuals, staff and the daily operations of an incarcerated living unit in accordance with Washington Administrative Code (WAC's), DOC policies and facility Operational Memoranda.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Supervise, monitor, and direct the operations of an incarcerated living unit to include security practices, incarcerated individual program assignments, sanitation of units, and compliance with DOC custody policies and operational memoranda.- Direct the security and accountability of incarcerated individuals assigned to the unit.
- Chair the Facility Risk Management Team/Multidisciplinary Facility Risk Management Team in their review and implementation of classification discussion and recommendations for Incarcerated individual programming, custody levels, and transition planning. Solicit input from all resources to include the Incarcerated individual.
- Ensure the living unit sanitation level is consistent with expectations that are mandated by local, State, County, and Federal guidelines.
- Ensure inspections/searches of Incarcerated individuals, incarcerated individual property, and living unit to include program and other areas of the unit, are completed in accordance with established Department policies and procedures.
- Ensure all maintenance standards are associated with the operation of the living unit are requested and completed in a timely manner that minimizes the impact on staff work areas and Incarcerated Individuals living conditions.
Plan, direct, and/or supervise the work of living unit staff, which includes Support Staff, Counselors, Correctional Officers, and Correctional Sergeants.- Establish and prioritize performance expectations for staff utilizing core correctional practices.
- Conduct timely employee performance evaluations and ensure proper training is provided. Recognize good performance and appropriately document in employee records. Assess staff individually for career development personal/professional goals and provide them with training and/or rotational experiences.
- Monitor work performance; investigate and take appropriate corrective or recommend disciplinary action.
- Ensure all persons supervised by this position read and comply with Department policies, Operational Memoranda and Post Orders/manuals.
Plan, direct and monitor unit programs.- Coordinate scheduled activities to enable all Incarcerated individuals the optimum availability for participation.
- Ensure resource information is made available to incarcerated individuals regarding programs and transitional opportunities.
- Create and support incentive programs and awards to promote unit morale and positive behavior.
Oversee, conduct and/or participate in hearings, investigations and meetings.- Oversee and conduct infraction hearings and classification hearings.
- Serve as the Disciplinary Hearing Officer.
- Participate with other management team members to develop, review and implement policy decisions, strategic plans and mission statements.
Duty Officer rotation.
- Serve as Facility Duty Officer on a rotational basis for notification of incidents at the facility per Department policies and Operational Memoranda.
- Be available during non-business hours. Respond to facility after hours within one hour, make notifications, provide advice and act as resource, provide delegate authority and authorization. Records calls and event details.
- Attend required Emergency Management trainings.
Qualifications Required Qualifications: - High School Diploma, GED or equivalent, AND
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and three years juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment, custody or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience.
OR
- Satisfactory completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 quarter credits) and five years juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment, custody or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience; AND
- Two years of experience as a supervisor. (This experience may be gained concurrently with the required experience above)..
**Relative experience will substitute year for year of required education.
Demonstrated ability to:
- Provide positive leadership in times of stress, conflict, and unforeseen events.
- Remain calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include, but not limited to, volatile, threatening, or other crisis/emergency situations.
- Expertly intervene in response to threats.
Preferred/ Desired Education, Experience and Comptencies:
- Working knowledge of DOC Policies, RCW's, WAC's and Operational Memoranda.
- Working knowledge of Incarcerated Individual management and supervision, including behavior management, classification process, sanitation, security and safety. Understanding of Incarcerated Individual programs, including preparation of Incarcerated Individuals for transition back into society.

Holidays Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.

Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday.
Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Pay status includes hours worked and time on paid leave.
Sick Leave Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave.
Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
Vacation (Annual Leave)Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.
Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.
Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
As provided in , an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and/or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position. Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165.
Note: Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for
exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.
Military LeaveWashington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.
Bereavement Leave Most employees whose family member or household member dies, are entitled to three (3) days of paid bereavement leave. In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
