Job Description

The Controls Engineer provides engineering support for the electrical and control systems functions within our operations. This position is responsible for hardware and software process control systems and equipment and will include any associated instrumentation. The Controls requires training and project management responsibilities such as evaluating areas of opportunity, designing modifications or improvements, and evaluation of need for new installations to maintain and increase operational efficiency of the process. This position will assist Maintenance, Operations, and other key personnel with assessment of, and proposed solutions to, various electrical equipment problems.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The Controls Engineer will be part of a team responsible for ensuring timely repair of equipment as well as performing automation and control system maintenance, repair and adjustments, and design of plant machinery and equipment control systems and the installation, testing and repair of electrical circuits for manufacturing equipment.
  • Ensure that PLC and software control systems for all equipment in the facility are operating properly; ability to diagnose and correct issues.
  • Participate in the development of functional design specifications for capital projects, including the design of sensing strategies, specification of appropriate hardware and components, and implementation of robust control strategies, reliable safety systems and operator friendly HMIs.
  • Take an active role in the continuous improvement of production control systems and components with an aim at improved capacity and flexibility
  • Responsible for design and implementation of production equipment integration. Assist in developing accurate, well-defined process parameters
  • Assist in training of the operating personnel in principles of unit operations, process control, controls technicians, maintenance and safety
  • Assist maintenance in evaluation of the equipment repairs and procedures, this is to include evaluation of the replacement parts for optimal performance
  • Operate computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks
  • Prepare and update detailed documentation of existing and new systems to include, diagrams, sketches, prints, schematics, functional specifications, version control, etc.
  • Confer with engineers, vendors or others to discuss existing and potential engineering needs for projects or products
  • Analyze system requirements, capacity, cost, and customer needs to determine feasibility of project and develop system plan
  • Inspect electronic equipment, instruments, products, or systems to ensure conformance to specifications, safety standards, or applicable codes or regulations


Qualifications
  • 4 year degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or similar discipline
  • Minimum 3 years engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in designing, programming, optimizing and analyzing controls of different equipment
  • Experience programming Mitsubishi, Allen Bradley, Omron, and other PLCs and HMIs to include hardware selection, program design and development, and system integration
  • Experience managing projects preferred
  • Continuous improvement experience a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize different projects and workload
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, (written and verbally) with peers, management, contractors and vendors
