Job SummaryThe Controller leads the company's day-to-day accounting operations and supports the Chief Financial Officer in maintaining accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting. This position oversees the general ledger, month-end and year-end close, project accounting, billing, accounts payable, payroll coordination, cash management, internal controls, audits, and tax and regulatory reporting. The Controller partners with operational leaders to strengthen financial visibility, improve processes, manage risk, and develop the accounting team.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, including review of journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules.
- Prepare and review accurate financial statements, management reports, forecasts, and variance analyses in accordance with company and corporate reporting requirements.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, chart of accounts, accounting records, and financial reporting systems.
- Oversee project accounting activities, including job-cost reporting, work-in-progress schedules, revenue recognition, committed costs, change-order impacts, and project closeout.
- Partner with project managers and operational leaders to review project financial performance, identify risks, and improve forecast accuracy.
- Provide oversight for accounts payable, accounts receivable, customer billing, collections, payroll coordination, cash receipts, and disbursements.
- Monitor cash flow, banking activity, account reconciliations, and working-capital requirements.
- Develop, document, implement, and monitor internal controls and accounting procedures that safeguard company assets and support reliable reporting.
- Coordinate internal and external audits and provide timely schedules, explanations, and supporting documentation.
- Support federal, state, local, sales-and-use, payroll, and other tax or regulatory reporting in coordination with the CFO and external advisors.
- Ensure compliance with corporate policies, contractual requirements, lien-waiver processes, subcontractor documentation, insurance reporting, and other construction-specific financial obligations.
- Administer and improve ERP accounting routines, system controls, reporting tools, and data quality; serve as a key resource for Viewpoint Vista and related systems.
- Recruit, coach, train, and develop accounting team members; establish clear responsibilities, cross-training plans, and backup coverage.
- Promote a service-oriented, collaborative accounting function that communicates clearly with employees, customers, vendors, auditors, and the corporate office.
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes, strengthen controls, improve reporting, and reduce financial and operational risk.
- Perform other accounting and financial duties as assigned.
QualificationsRequired:- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of seven years of progressive accounting experience, including responsibility for the full accounting cycle and financial statement preparation.
- Experience leading month-end and year-end close processes, account reconciliations, internal controls, and audit support.
- Prior experience supervising, coaching, or developing accounting personnel.
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and financial reporting practices.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and demonstrated experience using an ERP or construction accounting system.
- Strong analytical, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality, and work effectively across departments.
Preferred:- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation.
- Controller or Assistant Controller experience in the construction, mechanical contracting, specialty contracting, or related project-based industry.
- Experience with percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, work-in-progress reporting, job costing, union payroll, and construction billing.
- Proficiency with Viewpoint Vista, Textura, and related construction financial systems.
- Experience working within a publicly traded company or a multi-entity corporate reporting environment
